Simple Home Remedies ~ Elderberry Syrup

Posted in Herbal Happenings

We are feeling a bit better in the Love household today.  Thank you for your prayers and get well wishes!

To combat the yucky cough/cold virus that is making us feel bad, I cooked up a batch of Elderberry Syrup last night.  It tastes good and is good for you, too!  Even our pickiest little Love took it without whining.  I heard her tell her sister later, "That didn't taste bad at all!"

Click here to visit Love Living Simply (my other blog) and learn how to make your own Elderberry Syrup.

Under the Weather

Posted in Random Ramblings

Popping in ever so briefly to say Hello.  We're a bit under the weather again in the Love household.  A nasty cough/cold icky virus is making its way through the family these days, so we're tucked into favorite spots with cozy quilts, soft pillows, books, music, hot tea and other comforts of home.

The weather here is as yucky as we are feeling- cold and icky, so I couldn't get out to garden even if I felt up to it.  I'm off to take a nap and then settle in with a cup of Linden & Peppermint tea and a stack of books that I've been wanting to read.

It will be a day of quiet rest here.

Today's Thought ...

Posted in Random Ramblings

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8

Ever wonder why we complicate things so much when we have such simple instructions?

Have a wonderful weekend my friends!  I'll be sowing seeds indoors, reading about chickens (yes, we're finally getting a few backyard birds!), and digging a little deeper into the verse above.

We're Halfway There ...

Posted in Organic Gardening

to spring, that is.
Groundhog Day, Candlemas ... whatever you want to call today, it is the halfway to spring marker!

I know that cute little Phil predicted 6 more weeks of wintry weather; but that just means more time to prepare for the coming of spring!

I received my first seed order in the mail yesterday-
Agretti
Good King Henry
Bronze Arrow Lettuce
Merlot Lettuce
Aurora Orach
Tokyo Market Turnip
Vitamin Green
Lemon Gem Marigold
Breadseed Poppy
Hyssop
Dwarf Grey Sugar Pea
Peacevine Tomato
Pineapple Tomato
Verde Tomatillo

These came from Bountiful Gardens.

The tomatoes, tomatillo, and marigolds will be started indoors.  Most of the others will go directly into the garden and/or containers.

I should be receiving more seeds soon, and I will post photos of my new seed growing table once I get the seeds planted and all set up.

Have a Happy Halfway to Spring Day today!

What Brings You Joy?

Posted in Gratitude

Joy, which was the small publicity of the pagan, is the gigantic secret of the Christian.  ~G. K. Chesterton

Hannah and Carl in the baptism waters yesterday ...

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. 3 John 1:4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
  1Peter 1:3-9

Quick Clothespin Bag

Posted in Homekeeping Helps

In my new quest to learn to love doing the laundry, I put together this little clothespin bag today.

I had all the items just hanging around the house, so it was very thrifty to make.  I painted the old wooden hanger with some Peony Pink acrylic paint, then quickly rubbed it with a rag to make it look a bit aged.  I painted the clothespins the same color and then gave them a quick swipe of Whitewash with a dry brush after the pink dried.  To make the bag I simply turned the tank top inside out, cut off about 5 inches from the bottom,  and stitched it straight across.  After that, all that was left to do was turn the shirt right side out, hang it on the hanger and add the clothespins.  I think it is fun, and the Poky Little Puppy was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl.
I will probably removed the tag from inside the bag or put something prettier over it;  though the name on the label- passing4sane does make me laugh.  Some days that's all I am hoping to do!

Have a wonderful winter weekend.

Lavender for the Laundry

Posted in Homekeeping Helps

I spent some time working in the laundry area yesterday.  As I said in my Front Porch post yesterday, I'm trying to learn to love the laundry!

I spent the afternoon mixing up some nice smelling things to help me.

Here's what I made:

2 gallons of liquid laundry soap, scented with Lavender, Geranium & Lemon essential oils

1 gallon of Lavender-scented vinegar for softening

1 spray bottle of Lavender linen spray

1 lavender dryer sachet

Today I plan to stitch up a cute little clothespin bag, and then all I'll need is a sunny day!  That's not happening this weekend, so I will just hang my clothes inside to dry. The lavender scent and extra moisture the drying clothes put in the air will be nice, too.

Have a great weekend!

Cute Craft from the Pantry

Posted in Family Fun

Alpha Beans !  I just love this craft idea.  A bag of lima beans + a Sharpie = Lots of fun!

I plan to make a bag of these for my girls to use to practice spelling words, and to play  Scrabble or Boggle type wordbuilding games with.  I also think these would make cute refrigerator magnets.  You could spell out messages or a "Word of the Day" for yourself or the children.  JOY!  is my favorite

OK, check out the Alpha Beans and let me know what you think!  Also share any other creative ways to use them that you dream up.

p.s. Thanks for the get well wishes and the prayers!  We are all feeling a bit better today.

A Cure for What Ails You ...

Posted in Random Ramblings

A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book.  ~Irish Proverb

I'm adding to that cups of hot peppermint tea with ginger, honey & lemon; warm baths with rosemary, peppermint, and geranium essential oils; and some soup made with lots of garlic, onions, parsley and ginger.

Yes, we're a bit under the weather today.    I'm off to make more tea and curl up with a good book ... or take a nap, probably both!
