Carnage

The neighbors dog got into our chicken run and killed over a dozen chickens. The kids were all crying and we're all in a state of shock. We may have a few more die still.  We have injured ones crated on the back porch so we can take care of them. One has a bite and the others have severe injuries from pulled feathers. We covered the wounds with antibiotic ointment, that's about all we can do.

I had the kids count the flock after we got them rounded up and found that a several more were missing.  After searching a bit we found a hen hiding under the fence that the dog destroyed to get in.  We found 2 alive hiding under some car parts, 3 alive under the coop and we found one of DD's silkies half-dead under the shed.

My DD lost 3 of her 6 blue silkies, one of which died in her hands. We have 4 laying hens and 2 are injured, the rest of the 40+ chickens we own are all 16 weeks old.  We only have 2 roos for each breed we have.  If both roos are dead for any breed we can't breed them next year. I won't know until they get a bit older who some of the roos are.  I only have been able to figure out a few of them so far since they are young.  The prettiest roo we had is dead.  He was a very unusually colored Americana.  We also lost 3 silver laced wyandottes, a couple dominiques, 2 Americanas and at least 1 buff orphington. (I didn't get an accurate count yet, DS shoveled all of them into a bucket fast)

The neighbor came over and said "I hear we had an incident over here".. uh yea.. DUH? They said they had been thinking about getting the dog a new home since it's been getting into trouble at their house.  If it's been a problem at their house why don't they have it tied up???  It's on our property so much that our dog didn't bark at it since he's used to it being here. The neighbor was worried that I'd called the police. I told her I wouldn't IF the dog stayed tied up and was gone at the earliest possible time. She seemed sorry but not sorry enough to compensate us for our loss.  I don't know what to do.  I'm really too upset to deal with it right now.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of so many from your precious flock. My heart is breaking. New Year's eve of last, coyotes got into our chicken house and took out a third of our flock including our precious Dominque rooster and our blind in one eye Buff Orpington that we had already saved from a dog incident (that was why she was blind) - but the darkness was too much for her - it was a devastating loss to us. We still hurt from it.

Your neighbor needs to get rid of the dog and I can not imagine how difficult it may be to have to deal with them - but it is a livestock issue. Just because your livestock is "poultry" does not make them any less valuable or important.

It is very irritating when people only respect large breed livestock situations (like beef and dairy cattle or horses).

It will take some time for you and your children to heal.

My prayers are with y'all,
Harriette Jacobs
