Sun tea

I remember when I was growing up my mother made sun tea every available sunny day. Some days were less sunny than others and she would have to help the jug follow the sun by moving it to different areas outside. The front porch, the back porch.  Some days were so sunny and hot the tea would be done quickly, other days turned stormy and the tea wasn't quite done. I love the taste of tea, but I don't drink it often.  I don't think it likes me, I'm probably allergic and need to find a type I can drink. I can drink green tea, it doesn't seem to bother me.  I haven't tried it as a sun tea though.

It's been so hot here that I've been pushing fluids on the kids. I was trying to think of some things I could make so they would not get bored with water. My 12 yr old (soon to be 13) asked if we could make sun tea, like Bubbe (grandma) does, I said sure.  I have some tea jugs someone gave us, but I've never used them. I felt stupid having to call my mother to ask how many tea bags I needed to put in the jar, but we called.  My daughter filled the jug, added tea bags and set it out on the back porch.

Looking at that jug out there all day felt kind of strange.  I felt taken back in time in some ways and in other ways I felt like it's a little reminder that I've grown up and I'm no longer my mother's child. Every time I look out on the porch I get this little deja vu feeling.

The tea was a hit, the kids loved it.  There's another jug out on the back porch today. I guess it'll be a regular sight at my house in summer from now on.

Green tea works .... all kinds of teas, herbal or not. You use the same amount of tea for green or herbal as your 'black' tea.

I have a gallon jug with a pour spout on the top, but am looking for one with a spout on the bottom so I don't have to pour.

I use fresh mint leaves (lots) and let it sit all day, nearly - a fresh minty drink.

I'm glad your kids like it - it's a great way to get liquids into them.

I have never heard of this... there are "sun tea" jugs? This is a great idea - I will research. thanks!
