Ramblings from South Georgia

• 2006-Jul-10 - Explanation

OK, here's where we all together and help each other out, y'all.  We have had such a hard time lately trying to find decent movies to rent and/or watch with the family.  We draw a hard line on what our children can watch, and I don't mean to offend anyone here but this is the way it is: no profanity, no vulgarity, no sexual innuendos, no witchcraft or sorcery (which is really hard, even with the Chronicles of Narnia, etc...sometimes we have to bend a little, as long as it's all make-believe, you know?)  Old movies, decent family films, that's what we're looking for here.  Let's lend a hand with some ideas, shall we?

Thanks for sharing!

A couple of our favorite movies are Swiss Family Robinson and The Ugly Dacshund. I laugh so hard during the latter that I end up crying.

I, too, am very hard to please when it comes to movies. And, actually, I agree with Laura. I would love to throw the TV in the trash can. But my husband likes to watch the local news occasionally, so that is not an option.
We pretty much only watch movies that we rent from our local library. Haven't been to Blockbuster in years!
One movie I really like is Les Miserables (the 70's version with Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins). It is clean and there is a definite conversion of the main character. He repents over his sinful life and from that moment on, lives a different life.
If your children are quite young, I don't think they would be interested in it.
How about Anne of Green Gables. That is one of my favorite movies.
Roman Holiday, with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, is also really good. Clean...and the message is doing what is right over what one wants.
I also love the Little House DVD's. That was a good clean show, with lots of family love and hard work.
A current movie that we got from the library is Eight Below. It was very clean, with only a single kiss at the end.

I forgot to say that we love the old Roy Rogers movies. They are action packed Westerns, so there is gun violence. However, it is mostly noise...never any blood and guts. And never any bad language or sexual content.
Actually, these are among our favorite movies, and we own many of them.

Can you believe it's me again. I said I really despise the TV, but I keep coming up with movies to recommend. Doesn't make sense, does it?
Anyhow, we try to have a video night every other Saturday night, and we almost always get our movies from the library. One that we saw recently was The Wilderness Family. It is hokey, but good. It is actually about people who do what we are doing--homesteading. They get fed up with life in LA and go off to live off the land in Alaska. The movie is about their adventures, and it is just good clean fun. Perhaps a bit unrealistic, but I would rather have that than sex and profanity. It is about a functional family that loves each other instead of a dysfunctional family with disrespectful kids.
Pretty much other than Saturday night movie night, we don't watch anything else. I am always in the market for good clean movie recommendations, as there aren't many acceptable movies left at the library which we haven't already seen.

Woohoo, I'm getting some good ideas here...don't stop! By the way, the librarian recommended Sarah, Plain and Tall...anyone seen that?
