Ramblings from South Georgia

• 2006-Jul-10 - Chicken update

I went back to read my introduction post, and decided to give an updated head count on the poultry portion of our family!

We still have one rooster, Bobby, a white leghorn that literally rules the roost!  He's pretty friendly, as far as roosters go.  Every morning, he jumps up on his roost in the pen so my daughter can give him a pat or two in greeting.  He is hardly ever aggressive...except when my son wears his "Atlanta Braves" cap, he hates that hat.  I guess Bobby is not a Braves fan. :)  This rooster's name was particularly funny to me, when the children would talk about 'Bobby and the biddies.'  It sounded like a '60s pop band!

We still have 3 of the original hens, Snowbell (who is red lol), Tater Tot and Crazyhead.  Crazyhead's name used to be Lizzie, but last year we let her hatch biddies, and well...motherhood will truly change you!  She acted so crazy that the children took to calling her Crazyhead and the name stuck lol.  These are all Rhode Island Reds.

We bought some Buff Orpington biddies from the local feed store in the spring.  There are ohhhh probably 6 or so of them.  They're a really pretty color, kinda of a golden.  The grown chickens that we saw of this variety are gorgeous.  Don't know yet if these are roosters or hens, and yes they all have names but I don't remember all of them, I know there's an Annie and an Anthony, but the children can absolutely tell them apart!

We also have a different variety that we got from a coworker of my husband's.  Not sure of the exact name, but they're some sort of wild African chickens, and again, the adults of this variety are BEAUTIFUL.  They look like a painting or a sculpture, just gorgeous.  There are three of those, and the only name I can remember is 'Lil Red.'  And yes, the children know them by sight as well!

I think there are 13 chickens total, maybe 14.  I am not a 'bird' person, and I had to be convinced to get these.  My husband grew up on a farm and has always wanted a rooster.  One day, he came home from work with tales of the cute lil biddies that he saw at the country store.  Wouldn't that be a great school project? he said.  And the rest, as they say, is history :).
