Ramblings from South Georgia

• 2006-Jul-6 - Allergy testing...useful or useless?

Posted in Family life

Recently, my 13 yo was referred to an allergist for some issues with being short-of-breath when he gets hot.  We discovered a chronic sinus infection that we're trying to clear up with antibiotics, steroids and decongestants...but they want to do the allergy testing.  He's not 'doctor visit sick' very often, maybe twice a year, but of course has the common stuffiness, sneezing, sinus etc that seems to be the beauty of living in south Ga lol.  I have it myself :).  I went through allergy testing when I was a teenager and received injections once a week until I got tired of seeing no result and quit (about 1 1/2 to 2 years).  I don't know anyone who has had resounding positive results of all that testing and shots, etc.  Anyone else have an opinion?

Happy July!

My opinion is this: the allergy dr. will find SOMETHING he is allergic too. Then comes the drugs......

Everytime we walked into my ped. not matter WHAT the kids symptoms were, he tried to either prescribe allergy meds, or give us free samples of allergy meds. I finally had enough of him and switched docs. The same with my dh and I's GP. Everytime we went in, no matter the symptoms, he was giving us free samples or writing scripts for allergy meds....I never filled the scripts, and I threw the samples in the trash.

There is a website called Taste of Health. The lady that runs it, her name is Tina (Mom2boys). She can explain how 90% of allergies are food related, and by changing your diet that 85% of the allergies go away totally.

There is a great book called "What the Bible says about Healthy Eating" by Rex Russell. That's a good one too.

I had allergy tests done to figure out what was causing my psoriasis, only I went to a naturopath dr, and he did the tests by drawing some blood, and tehn the lab tested the blood, not me. It came back that I was allergic to ANYTHING made from milk (cow or goat), eggs, beef products, pineapple, cucumbers and lamb.
I went off all those things for about 2 months, and the psoriasis didn't change. and I gradually reintroduced those things back into my diet. I have always been wary of dairy products - I think I knew there was a problem, so I still do those in moderation, but everything else....
the only thing I truly have to avoid is powdered cheese products: mac & cheese, doritos, cheetos, cheese nibs, those kind of things and cream of **** soups. those can give me serious throat swelling in about an hour.
anyway, that is my story. So I guess the moral is, see what they say and follow the recommended for a bit, and slowly reintroduce....
