We had the BEST time at the Audio Adrenaline concert Saturday night! We also had the pleasure of seeing Farewell June, Sanctus Real and Skillet. They were all wonderful and each had a short testimony to share. It was chilling to witness over 100 people come forward to publically accept Christ. It was also a very special moment with Hunter as he recited the prayer with those who came forward.
During the concert, Hunter and Brittany spent most of the evening jumping up and down on the bleachers and singing along. Oh, okay, I did a little jumping myself. It was so hard to stay seated when such an awesome group is performing!! Audio Adrenaline sang our three favorite songs: Father's House, Get Down and Mighty Good Leader. We didn't get home until 12:30 in the morning!! It was worth it though!
After Church Sunday we came home to enjoy a simmering pot of veggie stew. For some odd reason, I actually got up early enough to put it on before we left for church. It was a good day for it because our temps finally dropped to the low 80's with a good breeze. Hunter, Jarrett and I took a nap after lunch while DJ and Brittany watched television together.
Britt and Hunter then left for the movie theater to see Cars with DJ's Aunt's and grandmother. We decided that this would be a good day to butcher a few chickens! I nervously read Carla Emery's book making mental notes of each step. I got everything strategically set up and then DJ came out. Well.......it appears that my wonderful husband has been holding out on me. Knowing full well that I have been very anxious about this chore, he failed to mention that he has done it before. Not on the farm, but in survival training! Grrr..................
He chased down the first chicken and quickly had it draining before I even had a chance to open my book up to "step 1". We then dipped it in the hot water and I began to remove the feathers. Not a glamorous job by any means, but it was not difficult. He then singed the chicken and removed the organs. We did three of them and that was all that we could stomach for the night.
While I DID order the meat chicks to put on the table, they were still my "girls" that I have been feeding and even playing with over the last four months. Infact, just before butchering, we discovered that they were jumping up and eating our blackberries that we stop to pick on the way to the coop. Ornery critters! We thought the deer were getting them but we could never find "proof".
Overall it is a good feeling to have raised meat for our meals. We are one step closer to being self sufficient. I believe that we should start getting eggs next month! I can't wait!!! |
