Dirt Days ~From Cherilyn

Dirt Days is the brainchild of Jenny Sabo.  She's actually the one who came up with the WOTD idea too.  If an off-shoot, sprout if you will, from a group her Mother belongs to in Maine called "Ladies of the Dirt".  Anyway, Cherilyn attended one of the Dirt Days held at Jenny's home and here is her report!

It was a down and dirty day. There we were, four students who were off-grid and on task, trying to unravel the secrets of sustainable living. We scribbled notes, nibbled homegrown delicacies and glanced furitively around, trying to take it all in. Three teachers. Three hours. How were we going to learn the secrets of sustainable living in that time?

Kate spilled the beans on growing great greens. She even gave us the skinny on her whole garden. About a year ago, she had only a small to medium sized garden, and now she's growing greens for the Bozeman Co-op. Incredible. Rebecca slipped us clues on how to crack into whole grains' natural nutrition by soaking them. Ah-ha. After a tour of sustainable living in action on the Sabo Farm, we flocked around Jenny from Whitehall to get tips on raising bum lambs and a rundown on raising sheep. Amazing.

Then, the reward. After taking in all of the knowledge, advice and inspiration these folks could dish out, we got to dish up. Everyone brought the best from their kitchen to share, but I had to skate. Three boys wait for no mother, no matter how intriguing the topic. Next time I'll be able to chow and rub elbows with the characters who make their way to Dirt Days each month in little Harrison, Montana. Who knew such a revolution was brewing here each month?

Any questions? Call Jenny at (406) 685-3248. But don't tell her I sent you. It'll blow my cover.

But seriously, folks--Dirt Days meets at the Sabo Ranch at the end of each month. Presentations start at 1 p.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. The day ends with a suppertime 100 Mile Potluck challenge, where participants are asked to bring a dish made from local food.

The next Dirt Days is scheduled for Sunday, March 25.
Here's March's lineup:
--Jenny Sabo on raising roaster chickens
--Kathryn Hainsworth on starting brassicas and mid-season garden crops
--Bill von Brethorst giving an introduction to alternative energy

Keep watching for more on Jenny!  Her story is next!
