Damascus Nuked - Isaiah 17:1 - SPECIAL REPORT

01:40, Saturday, July 14, 2007 .. Posted in Signs of the times .. 0 comments .. Link

Hello All,

Besides running Wisdom Farms, many of you know that I also run a website dealing with Bible Prophecy and World Events called Prophezine. (www.prophezine.com)

If you have been keeping an eye on the news, you know that the Middle East is a powder Keg waiting to blow.

If you are a student of Bible Prophecy you know the next MAJOR piece to drop into the puzzle is the destruction of Damascus. (Isaiah 17)

I published a 28 page report this week that I feel needs to be shared here.

If this Middle East war goes down and if Israel retaliates like MANY people and sources are expecting, Damascus will be nuked.

This is a fact based upon what scripture states. This is also the word coming down from many avenues and not just the bible prophecy arena either.

In this article, I also included part of my 11 page report, "11 Items You Need To Get Now."

Why do I include this? Because no matter what happens, a major war in the Middle East will effect everyone globally and the ramifications will be pretty hard hitting, especially in the pocket book.

The following is my intro to this and a link where you can download this document for free.

A Prophezine SPECIAL REPORT

The Middle East - A View from the Wall

I, like many of you, consider myself a watchman on the wall. We are placed there to keep an eye on things and give an early warning alarm to the church.

In the past few days I have had information sent to me from various sources as well as from some of you, the PZ Insiders.

At times events take place at you which time appears to lay out a puzzle, sequence of events, pattern, etc.  We as watchmen on the wall see that “pattern” interpret it and then voice our alarm accordingly.

These past few days, that very thing has taken place with me and I assume, has taken place with several of you based upon the many emails I have received.

First of all I want to state very clearly that I am NOT some prophet, son of a prophet or anything like that. I do not believe in nor stand upon signs, wonders, dreams, visions, either. In the last days we are called to be sober and level headed.

I also want to thank PZ Insiders Jim C, Mark M, Denise S, Dave B, for your help with the timeline, news and council.

Second, in presenting this information, I have great excitement as well as great concern.

Let me explain why I am concerned.

Several weeks ago I wrote an article titled “ The Effects of A Middle East War.” In this article I lay out how a Middle East war will affect us globally, even though we as a nation or any nation for that matter, may or may not be involved. So no matter what, a war in the Middle East will have dramatic repercussions no matter where you live, here or abroad.

You can read the article “ The Effects of A Middle East War” by following this URL - http://www.prophezine.com/PZArticles/TheEffectsofaMiddleEastWar/tabid/602/Default.aspx

Now, let me explain why I am excited.

If situations play out according to what seems to be taking place, we as Christians may be presented one of the greatest opportunities to share the gospel, doors will be opening left and right. We need to be ready for this and not become victims of the events around us.

Situation Report – Where We Stand, a View from the Wall

As you know, a lot of news has been coming across the wires. This week we published a special PZ Insider Report on Isaiah 17, the destruction of Damascus.

Things are moving at a lightning pace there.

Taking the news and other information given me, I am presenting a possible scenario in light of Isaiah 17.

The E-Coli Contamination??? YEA RIGHT

The E-Coli Contamination Scare & Wisdom Farms
(www.wisdomfarms.com)

A few days ago I woke up to to the following headline...

Tyson Recalling 40,000 Pounds Of Beef
Meat Has Signs Of E. Coli Contamination

Tyson Fresh Meats is recalling more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef with signs of E. Coli contamination.

It had been shipped to Wal-Mart stores in 12 states.

Tyson said the recalled products were sent to Wal-Mart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

I find it VERY interesting that for the past year we have been having E-Coli breakouts in some of the weirdest foods.

SPINACH??? .. get real!

Now we have yet another E-Coli in our hamburger meat.

Is all these food contaminations coincidence? I honestly do not think so. I personally think that these are "trial runs." In fact , STRATFOR just put out a report about how terror cells are "probing" our security and response.

In early January of 2007 we produced our multimedia CD "Escape The End TIme Money Snare." With the success of this CD, we received a lot of email asking for follow ups to the CD. These requests were asking about homesteading & farming skills, survival skills, woodsman skills and the like. So instead of producing CDs, the natural course was to produce a website.

Today's headlines about E-Coli hammer home that stewardship and knowledge is greatly needed in today's world.

Tracye and I feel very strongly about stewardship. Christ told us in Luke 19:13 to "occupy till I come"

Many people have their heads in the sand or are wearing "rose colored glasses."

There are even many people out there that feel that "God will not cause hard times for me.. He will just come and get me in the rapture."

This is a foolish mistake and one of not "occupying till I come," nor of one being a good steward.

Hosea 4:6 (KJV) My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:

Today Christians are seeing more and more a need to separate oneself from the world, but without loosing one's salt and light for the gospel.

As you know, America is on a path of self destruction. I as well as other ministries out there feel that the Lord's return is very soon, but we as Christians need to be good stewards and occupy till He returns.

With that said, I want to introduce to you a daughter ministry to Prophezine; our stewardship site called Wisdom Farms. http://www.wisdomfarms.com

Wisdom Farms is a site that is focusing on many of the forgotten skills and knowledge our great grandparent knew and was common knowledge back then. Our goal is to provide resources, articles, video and audio to help you and your family be good stewards over what the Lord has given you.

In light of yet another E-Coli contamination scare, people need real information to help them and their families.

In fact, I am kind of excited about sharing a video I just produced called "Dirty Bombs and Learning About Radio Active Fallout." This video is about 30 minutes long (189 megs) and I have incorporated some great footage from the Civil Defense days talking about radio active fallout.

It is this sort of information that we feel is needed as well as information that has been forgotten. We are both working hard to add content to the site daily and continue to find authors and experts who are coming on board to be part of the Wisdom Farm writing family.

Like the Prophezine website you need to register at Wisdom Farms to gain access to the site.

Here is what is new so far for the month of June on Wisdom Farms...

* Wisdom Farms Forum - Forums

* Wisdom Farms Yahoo Group - Yahoo Group

* 36 Ways to Reduce Stress - Family

H.R. 1592 - URGENT - CHRISTIANS WILL GO TO JAIL!!!

Christians in bull's-eye in new 'hate crimes' plan
Congress working to create penalties for non-PC views

A fast-tracked congressional plan to add special protections for homosexuals to federal law would turn "thoughts, feelings, and beliefs" into criminal offenses and put Christians in the bull's-eye, according to opponents.

"H.R. 1592 is a discriminatory measure that criminalizes thoughts, feelings, and beliefs [and] has the potential of interfering with religious liberty and freedom of speech," according to a white paper submitted by Glen Lavy, of the Alliance Defense Fund.

"As James Jacobs and Kimberly Potter observed in Hate Crimes, Criminal Law, and Identity Politics, 'It would appear that the only additional purpose [for enhancing punishment of bias crimes] is to provide extra punishment based on the offender's politically incorrect opinions and viewpoints,'" said Lavy.

The proposal has been endorsed by majority Democrats on the committee, and already has 137 sponsors in the full House, making it possible it could be voted on in a matter of days or weeks.

"This is a terrible thing, to criminalize thought or emotion or even speech," Lavy told WND, referring to H.R. 1592, now pending at the committee level in the U.S. House. Democrats there have been turning back amendments that would strip it of its worst provisions, according to an observer.

Bishop Harry Jackson, chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition, said the plan, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Protection Act of 2007, is no more than "a surreptitious attempt by some in Congress to strip the nation of religious freedom and the ability to preach the gospel from our church pulpits."

"It will stamp all over our doctrine and practice of our faith," he said. "We believe what the Bible says. If you start there we've got a major problem."

Secondly, it unfairly restricts the expression of fair opinion by Christians, he told WND. "If anything, gays are getting undue deference awarded to them by the courts. That's why we have the same-sex marriage fight and that kind of thing."

Rev. Louis Sheldon, director of the Traditional Values Coalition, which represents 43,000 churches across the nation, told WND that the Democrats sponsoring and supporting the issue "have sold out to the homosexual agenda."

He said churches need to awaken to the dangers of having pastors, lay leaders, or even those sitting in the pews sent to jail for their biblical views. "When they [realize they] could go to jail for preaching the Word of God, they'll be concerned," he told WND.

Sheldon's organization is releasing a poster showing Jesus as a wanted fugitive, for "crimes" under the planned "hate crimes" legislation.

He also is running an e-mail campaign to alert members of Congress about their constituents' concerns.

WND columnist Janet Folger this week warned in a commentary called "Pastors: Act now or prepare for jail," that in New Hampshire, a crime that typically carries a sentence of 3 1/2 years was "enhanced" to 30 years because a robber shouted an anti-homosexual name at his victim.

"Think about it for a minute. If saying a mean anti-homosexual word adds an additional 23-26 ½ years to a sentence, and people live to around 80, that penalty is one-fourth of your life for the words you say. And while this was in addition to a robbery penalty, how much of a jump would it really be to penalize the speech 'infraction' alone? And just what constitutes an 'anti-gay epithet'? Would an 'anti-gay epithet' be to say, 'Homosexuality is a sin,' or 'Homosexuals should repent'? What if you informed someone that 'Homosexuality is harmful to your health'? If I were you, I wouldn't try it in New Hampshire," Folger wrote.

Folger's organization, Faith2Action, has launched a series of ads about Philadelphia grandmothers who were thrown in jail in Pennsylvania under that state's "hate crimes" law – and faced the possibility of 47 years in jail – for testifying in public about their Christian faith.

Those ads can be viewed at StopHateCrimesNow.com.

One, Arlene Elshinnawy, 75, and grandmother of three, was holding a sign: "Truth is hate to those who hate the truth," before she was hauled off by police officers.

The proposal is by U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the head of the House Judiciary Committee.

On Sheldon's website, he warned the bottom line is that in a court of law "cross-dressers rights would trump a pastor's right to preach the Bible, if the so-called Hate Crimes bill … passes."

Bishop Jackson cited well-known cases of the application of such a law in other nations: "In Australia, two evangelical pastors were charged with violating the State of Victoria's 'hate crimes' laws last year for criticizing Islam. In Canada, a Catholic city councilor was fined $1,000 for publicly stating that a gay couple's lifestyle was 'not normal and not natural,'" he said.

“As an African American, I have long questioned the attempts of the homosexual community to piggy back on the legislative breakthroughs blacks have achieved in civil rights. This legislation will not just over-protect homosexuals, it will bring the threat of invasive, governmental interference with the doctrines and practice of the Church. As some homosexual activists chant, ‘Stay out of our bedrooms,’ we are here to say, ‘Stay out of our pulpits!’” said Bishop Jackson.

Lavy's white paper, delivered to Congress just a few days ago, pointed out some of the results if the law is adopted. "It provides a federal remedy for a person who is attacked for promoting homosexual relationships, but not for a person who is attacked for encouraging people to stop engaging in homosexual behavior because it is physically and psychologically harmful," he said. "Worse yet, it provides for federal prosecution of a murderer who spews racial epithets at the victim, but not for a cold-blooded killer that is paid to commit the crime."

"There is no justification for this disparate treatment. Violent crimes should be punished regardless of the characteristics of the victim," he said.

"The emotion of hate is an unfortunate reality of the human experience. But it is not a crime unless accompanied by a criminal action – and even then it is the action that is within the police power of the government, not the emotion." he said. "The reality is that 'hate' crime laws are designed to punish people for what they think, feel, or believe."

And even more problematic, he said, is the inclusion of a definition of 'hate crime' from section 280003(a) of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. "There is legitimate concern that once Congress makes any 'hate' crime a federal offense, the categories of crime will expand to include speech that causes someone to 'feel' intimidated, just as they have in other places such as Australia, Canada, and Sweden," he said.

Lavy's analysis noted that in New Jersey already it is a "hate crime" to communicate in a manner likely to cause "annoyance or alarm."

"One would not expect a reasonable person to feel threatened or feel fear of harm as the result of an innocuous communication. Nevertheless, the entire faculty at Ohio State University's Mansfield campus apparently agreed that university librarian Scott Savage was guilty of threatening behavior for a simple statement in 2006. His 'threat'? Recommending four books for freshman reading… The four books were "The Marketing of Evil," by [WND Managing Editor] David Kupelian, The Professors by David Horowitz, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis by Bat Ye'or, and It Takes a Family by Sen. Rick Santorum."

The recommendation made three professors feel "unsafe" on campus and the entire faculty voted to file charges of sex discrimination and harassment against Mr. Savage for "anti-gay hate mongering," Lavy wrote. The charges were dismissed later, and Savage now has responded with a lawsuit against several university professors.

But under the proposal, such a recommended list for reading "could be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney General."

Lavy's evaluation also noted that San Francisco already has stated in a resolution that organizations seeking to minister to those engaged in homosexual behavior "were responsible" for homosexual student Matthew Shepard's death in Wyoming, even though his killers have said they did it for drugs and money.

Under such a new law, advertising its "Love Won Out" conferences, addressing homosexuality, would subject Focus on the Family to federal prosecution, he said.

At William Patterson University in Jew Jersey, a student-employee was formally reprimanded for saying he didn't want to receive promotional e-mails advocating for the lesbian lifestyle, because that sent a message of a "threat," Lavy said.

Furthermore, statistics show that during 2004 there were only 774 actual "hate crimes" recorded, five murders, four rape and the rest assaults – all of which can be prosecuted without special federal laws, he said.

Rev. Ted Pike, of the National Prayer Network, has been especially active in warning Christians of the approaching danger.

"Most persons who are concerned about imminent passage of the federal 'anti-hate' bill don't realize that S. 1105 in the Senate and H.R. 1592 in the House are actually amendments to a federal hate law passed in 1969. During the height of the civil rights movement, 'Title 18, U.S.C., Sec. 245' stipulated that no one could verbally '…attempt to…intimidate' another person (chiefly black) away from enjoyment of their federally protected right to equal employment, public services, housing, voting rights, jury privileges, etc. If the government finds such verbal 'intimidation' in a state and state officials are not enforcing these guarantees, the federal government can invade states' rights in local law enforcement, upholding Title 18," he said.

Now, in 2007, he said, "the present hate bill grants [special rights] to homosexuals, transvestites, and transsexuals."

The proposal would make it "federally indictable to '…attempt to…intimidate' a homosexual from believing that he (even if he has AIDS or hepatitis) has the right to work in a restaurant, be employed as a police officer or summer camp counselor, or has equal rights to housing and employment anywhere he wishes," he said.

"A pastor, Christian broadcaster or publisher who verbally attempts to 'intimidate' homosexuals by describing homosexuality as an abomination (Lev. 18:22) are thus high-profile targets for indictment under this legislation," he said.

He noted that it also would be illegal for a Christian church to discriminate against an applicant as pastor because of his homosexuality or her lesbianism.

He said the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith has been leading the charge for such crime bills for years, and has explained on its website how its campaign already has installed laws at the state level.

Michael Marcavage, director of Repent America, Peter LaBarbera, of Americans for Truth, Brad Dacus, of Pacific Justice Institute, and others already have expressed their alarm.

URGENT - Pagan morality' on way to becoming law

09:25, Thursday, April 12, 2007 .. Posted in Signs of the times .. 5 comments .. Link

We are living in times where our very Christian values are being placed upon the chopping block.

In Oregon there is a proposed law to grant broad new powers to the homosexual community by designating them as members of a protected minority class.

The entire thrust of this law is to invade churches, Christian schools, ect with lawsuits regarding hiring practices. This law has the capability to create further "hate laws" thus muzzling the mouths of pastors and even ministries such as Prophezine for taking a stand against sodomy and calling it what it is, an abomination.

I ask that you take some time to review this article as well as act on a petition at http://www.stopthebilloregon.com/

The time to stand is now.

Pagan morality' on way to becoming law
State aims to 'eliminate attitudes' that oppose homosexuality

A legislative plan to "eliminate attitudes" opposing homosexuality is moving forward in Oregon, even though opponents claim it threatens churches and establishes pagan morality as a benchmark for their operations.

Senate Bill 2, already endorsed by the state Senate and favored by Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Democrat, now heads to the floor of the state House following a 5-1 committee endorsement.

It is expected to be voted on within the next week.

In the House Rules Committee, an amendment was offered that would have provided an exemption for Christian churches and Christian groups in the proposal to grant broad new powers to the homosexual community by designating them as members of a protected minority class.

However, the amendment was rejected in favor of a plan to continue to allow homosexuals to demand Christian churches hire them when there are job openings – among other issues.

"This is still an intrusion of the state into religious liberty, and makes [Christian organizations] subject to state control," David Crowe, of Restore America, told WND.

"It favors the homosexual community and puts the church in a defensive posture, having to defend itself and its beliefs, policies, doctrines and employment," he said.

The Oregon Family Council had proposed an amendment derived from similar legislative plans in other states where homosexual community members have been granted special rights, but it was rejected.

"This is very objectionable. It reveals that this is an agenda. They couldn't care less about what the people of Oregon think," said Crowe.

His organization's petition to encourage legislators to oppose the plan already has 6,000 signatures and is growing at the rate of about 1,000 per day.

We're going to tell the world what is being dictated (to Christians and Christian churches) in Oregon," Crowe said.

He said the attitude on the part of lawmakers was typified by a comment from state Rep. Peter Buckley, from Ashland, who didn't want to provide "more exemptions," likening the situation to "past racist employment motives."

It used to be signs that said "No Irish need apply," he suggested. "Only now it's like, 'No gays or lesbians need apply for jobs.'"

Buckley insists the church must employ homosexuals, said Crowe.

"He has no regard, no understanding whatsoever of the religious community at all, and certainly no respect for the U.S. Constitution," Crowe explained. "He says he's going to summarily override anything in the Constitution. He believes we ought to be forced to hire homosexuals. They come to the door, we ought to hire them."

He said the homosexual-rights promoters are becoming "very righteous" in their attitudes, saying, "We're against any kind of discrimination and certainly this kind as well."

Churches, meanwhile, are being portrayed as impeding "what is really good."

The entire issue, however, is built on false pretenses, Crowe said, because the need for such legislation can only be substantiated if there is a significant problem with discrimination against homosexuals.

In Oregon, while about 170 cases have been reported since 2000, a state agency confirmed the validity of only a handful of cases.

"The substance is not there," Crowe said.

He also said the legislators supporting the plan need to look at the document and ask some questions, including, what is the definition of sexual orientation and is that a state of mind; will pedophiles be protected under the legislation; and what sexual acts will become protected.

But the proposal leaves churches unprotected in their religious beliefs and actions that derive from those beliefs, he said. It states churches are exempted "only if the employment, housing or the use of facilities is closely connected with or related to the primary purposes of the church or institution. …"

Then the issue is left to the state courts to determine any relationship to "the primary purposes of the church."

One letter to the editor apparently spoke for many Christians in Oregon. "Oregon Senate Bill 2 … elevates immoral behavior to acceptance and approval. Will polygamy be granted civil rights status next?" wrote Mike Knutz of McMinnville.

"The bill restricts religious freedom. … It denies religious liberty to business owners. … And the bill goes even further to establish 'a program of public education calculated to eliminate attitudes upon which practices of discrimination because of sexual orientation are based,'" he wrote.

"People who view homosexual conduct as wrong, sinful and or unhealthy will see their tax dollars at work against their own moral code."

Crowe said the results of the bill would be to "limit your free speech rights and rights of conscience; require public schools to teach that homosexual/lesbian/bisexual behavior is 'okay' and 'moral'; impact your rights as a business owner; and put judges in authority on certain church matters."

"The law – and this is onerous – has a clause that talks about developing a program of education to change our attitudes," Crowe said. "To change our attitudes? Is it the government's business to change attitudes? But that's precisely what's in the bill."

Nearly 500 Christian pastors, including one leader representing the 30,000 people in his organization's many churches, have opposed the proposal but have been fighting an uphill battle in a legislature dominated by Democrats.

Crowe called the plan "the most sweeping and culturally devastating law in Oregon history, establishing pagan morality under the guise of a 'civil right,' and imposing it upon all Oregonians under the cover of 'law.'"

Got Food? - Wheat Warning UG99 A New Blight

08:29, Sunday, April 8, 2007 .. Posted in Signs of the times .. 0 comments .. Link

Several months ago I reported on the citrus crops being in danger. This winter there was cattle starvation due to a lack of feed and a moth that is poised to attack the orange groves in FL. We are now hearing of a new "wheat blight" named UG99 coming and taking hold. I personally believe our saving grace lies in organic farming and heirloom/native seeds not only for backyard gardeners, hobby farms but for commercial farms. Ray - Wisdom Farms

Wheat Warning—New Rust Could Spread Like Wildfire

Janet Raloff

As the world's population continues to grow, so does its appetite for cereal grains, which include such dietary staples as wheat. This growing demand has driven agricultural scientists to develop higher yielding grain varieties. However, wheat growers face a challenging threat to bountiful yields with the emergence of a new and virulent fungal pathogen. It stands poised to hammer wheat yields globally, according to data released this month in Nairobi, Kenya, at an international symposium convened to address the blight.

SEEDY INFECTION. This photo, taken Sept. 6 at the Njoro Agricultural Research Station in Kenya, shows a seed head of wheat heavily infected with Ug99.
CIMMYT

The new pathogen goes by the name of Ug99, for the nation—Uganda—and the year in which its emergence was formally recognized. This variant of the Puccinia graminis fungus, a type of black-stem rust, has been popping up in fields throughout East Africa. Rusts take their common name from the fact that the pathogens tend to have a vivid red or orange hue. At the end of a growing season, black-stem rusts sprout dark spores that can survive over winter.

At the Nairobi meeting, officials with the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center—an organization best known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT—summed up much of what they know about the Ug99 rust. For instance, the centers' scientists noted that most wheat currently being grown around the world has either established susceptibility to the new pathogen or unknown susceptibility. At present, CIMMYT officials reported, "only 0.3 percent of the more than 44 million hectares planted to known varieties [of wheat] is moderately resistant to Ug99."

In monitored test plots of wheat, Ug99 reduced grain yields by as much as 71 percent. Its virulence indicates Ug99 "has broken down the sources of resistance that have provided effective protection [for wheat against black-stem rusts] for over 30 years," the CIMMYT researchers said.

If not quashed soon, Ug99 infections might bloom into global crop epidemics within the next 15 years. In Africa alone, CIMMYT projected, grain-yield losses from such blights could approach $1 billion in value. Such events would increase the price of wheat on global markets and contribute to regional food shortages. These risks are especially grave for developing nations where reliance on wheat is high and budgets for fungicides are almost nonexistent, CIMMYT noted.

At the meeting, CIMMYT officials circulated a new report on Ug99's threat. They also announced plans to upgrade or develop new research centers in the heart of East Africa. These facilities will be screening local wheat cultivars for newly mutated genes that might confer resistance to Ug99 and then launching efforts to breed new lines of wheat carrying those genes.

Although wheat growers around the world had recently come to view stem rust as a thing of the past, the new CIMMYT report says, "new data show that such an assumption is no longer—and probably never was—warranted."

Pesticides are not the answer

East Africa has long been a breeding ground for new and virulent stem rusts—probably because the area has a mild climate and farmers plant wheat year-round.

f6580_2865.jpg

SPOTTED. These wheat stems are infected with spores of the fungal blight Ug99.
CIMMYT

Ordinarily, stem-rust spores move only short distances, one stem infecting another as they brush against each other. However, Ug99 makes five distinct types of spores. Of these, the one known as the urediniospore is especially infectious and unique in its ability to ride air currents. Winds can carry these spores for hundreds or even thousands of miles.

Until recently, the threat of such long-range rust spread was largely discounted because scientists believed that ultraviolet light from the sun would kill spores that got swept into high-altitude wind currents and then hitchhiked there for days. To the contrary, recent studies have shown that fungal spores have survived wind transport from Africa to at least as far as the Caribbean (SN: 10/06/01, p. 218).

Although large-scale commercial growers typically use fungicides to deal with rusts, these chemicals are costly. Spraying can run to more than $100 per hectare (0.4 acre), CIMMYT notes.

That's well outside the budget of farmers in developing countries. Therefore, the new report argues, ignoring these small growers' needs for Ug99-resistant cultivars risks launching frequent and potentially uncontrollable black-stem rust epidemics from untreated fields.

Epidemic pending?

Until a half-century ago, many popular wheat varieties were vulnerable to many variants of P. graminis. Mention of their sighting would trigger terror in the hearts of farmers, since an infection could rapidly render a healthy field of wheat into "a black tangle of broken stems and shriveled grain," the CIMMYT report says.

These fungal blights periodically triggered disastrous epidemics until breeders began intense efforts to select and breed wheat lines with genes resistant to black-stem disease. Indeed, CIMMYT and its predecessor organization, created in 1943, owe their origins to global campaigns aimed at countering this wheat rust.

The success of those breeding efforts "has led to complacency throughout the wheat community," observes Norman E. Borlaug, the 91-year-old Nobel prize winner credited with launching the "green revolution." It harnessed intensive plant-breeding programs to improve the yields of wheat, maize, and other plants that serve as dietary staples in developing countries.

Although Ug99 appears confined to Africa at this time, CIMMYT reports that epidemics of less-virulent wheat-stem rusts have occurred in Turkey, Australia, Paraguay, and the U.S. Midwest. These outbreaks indicate that commonly planted wheat cultivars are vulnerable to Ug99 and other P. graminis variants, according to CIMMYT.

In his preface to the new CIMMYT report, Borlaug observes that breeders around the world have acknowledged that "resistance to stem rust was no longer a leading breeding objective." And that's what makes the recent outbreak of Ug99 in East Africa so troubling, he says.

Borlaug pointed out that, like wildfires, the spread of stem rust relies on favorable climate conditions, air movement, fuel (in this case, susceptible wheat), ignition points, and complacency. "Once started, both [wildfires and rust epidemics] are difficult to stop," he says.

That's why Borlaug argues that mobilization against this blight is imperative. "The prospect of a stem-rust epidemic in wheat in Africa, Asia, and the Americas is real and must be stopped before it causes untold damage and human suffering," he warns.

At the meeting in Nairobi, CIMMYT thanked Borlaug for "bringing this problem to the attention of the international community" and vowed it would indeed be launching a new Global Rust Initiative.
