That Thar Chicken Coop IS Finished Fer Now
(pirate speak)

Hello all,

We are excited because we woke up this morning to the sounds of our rooster crowing. Yep we have finished our chicken coop and thar be chickens a livin' out there!

We still need to build some roosting areas in the coop as well as nesting boxes. I also have to tighten some of the chicken wire. But we are pretty much finished and they are so happy to get out of those small cramped cages.

Here is how the coop turned out.

So we are happy to have that some what finished.. next the garden and then Tracye wants a Picnic table built.

Ray

Ahh, the joys of a man and his coop, heh? My husband and eldest son were tickled to pieces when they finished remodeling the room in the barn for our chickens...with a snake problem around here, they decided to wrap the entire room with chicken wire (hardware cloth would have worked better, live and learn) then built the nesting boxes and made the roost poles from saplings we had an abundance of. The roosts also provide the 'steps' up to the nesting boxes. They even built a little 'ramp' with twig runners so the ladies could get in and out to their run a bit easier.
You'd have thought they just had just designed the Taj Mahal or something out there they were pattin' themselves on the back so much :o)
I hate to point out to him that the room is great, but we now have another 35 chicks waiting to join the ladies and I think they will be a bit cramped....time for another room, I think!

Great job. How many birds do you have out there?
Deanna

>> We have 16 chickens, 4 baby chicks, 5 "teen" and 6 hens with one rooster.

that looks very nice - we need to redo ours - we just have 2 chickens, but they need more room. They don't leave the grass there very long! Jill

Thanks for your kind comments on my blog. I really enjoy yours and your wife's. The coop looks great! I would love to have my own chickens, but for right now be buy our brown eggs from some local Old Order German Baptists - we get whole milk from them, too.

They have an inventive arrangement - since they live like the Amish and don't have electricity, they have a little shed with refrigerators runs by generators. You get your milk and eggs and put your $$ in a bucket on top of one of the friges. Very cool.

Back to the chickens...when our girls were little, during a weekend when my dh had to work all weekend, I took our girls - about 6 & 9 at the time - out to the country to spend the night with an aunt and uncle of mine. The next a.m. we were awakened by the rooster just outside our window. One of my dd's woke up, looked at me and whispered, "WHAT was THAT?!" I told her it was a farmer's alarm clock! lol
