Rain and The WORMS!!!

Rain And The Need For Worms

Ever have the desire to get things done?

What about a long list of honey do's?

I have that but it seems that no matter what I plan, wrenches get thrown into the mix.

For example, I HOPE to get our chicken coop finished tomorrow, we have been having a lot of rain, which is good we need it big time. But it has hampered us getting the chicken coop finished. We want to get the garden started with tilling up the garden. We need to have seed in the ground by the end of March. But again the rain is hampering things.

So what are we thinking about here?

WORMS...

Yep you read it right.

Has anyone here raised worms? We are looking into this to help better our garden with their castings as well as sell to some of the local shops here. Yet another small homestead cashflow.

Here is what we are planning on building today since it is raining again...

I would love to hear any input.

I've always wanted a wormery. From what I understand they are fairly easy to grow.

Our local university has been trying to raise them in a very large bin and they die, so if you are going for quantity, you might keep that in mind and only do several small bins instead.

May God bless your endeavors!

We wanted to have worms for years and dh made a worm bin out of wood, but we never got the worms & it became a rabbit cage. Finally we splurged & bought the plastic kind and the worms can with it - http://store.compostguide.com/wormcomposter.html
The best thing I like about them is the compost tea - you can use it to water plants & they really really love it. We've had it around a year and keep it in the basement - I can check it when I do laundry. They just quietly do their thing. There are still worms in the first layer & the 2nd layer is about 1/4th full. I haven't used the vermicompost yet, but plan to use it to put on top of garden plants after they're coming up. I think if you want to sell worms you would have to have several small bins so that you would always have some to sell. I love having a worm farm. One thing they really like is squash. I usually put some food in and cover it with wet newspaper and make sure it doesn't get too dry. I can get as much worm tea as I want because it doesn't hurt to dump water over them because the excess will drain out. Have fun!! I don't scientifically feed them by measuring - if they finish the food they can always eat the newspaper & they do. I just feed them every 4-6 days. Jill
P.S. - You can also sell the worm tea - I don't but I've read about it on the net.
