The Rocky Mountains are beautiful, but because we live by that mountain range...well our yard is also full of rocks. So, this afternoon we went outside and started to pick up rocks, rocks, and yes some more rocks. Now, we had some medium, heavy rocks, but Teresa wasn't going to let that slow her down. She was huffing and puffing putting those rocks in the bucket. Then we had some big rocks that were even heavier...now Teresa did try to pick those up as well, but her little arms just weren't strong enough. So, Tristen, Thomas, and Tyme helped her out with those. Then we had some small rocks, that everyone could pick up without even breaking a sweat. We even had some tiny rocks that nobody wanted to pick up because come on we are Williams' and we are strong. Tiny rocks are no match for us...or are they? Actually, yes they are. Why? You ask...well because there are so many. I really do think that if we picked up those rocks for the next five years we would still have those little, tiny, annoying rocks. I think this is going to be a long and drawn out battle for this homestead. We are going to rage a war against these little pests, but I have a very strange feeling that they will eventually win...no matter how long or how hard of a fight we put up! Darn those pesky rocks! What else did we do today? Well, we are going to try our hand at growing potatos. We are going to do it the tire method that Jackie Clay mentioned in the Backwoods Home Magazine. If we do it this way we can get about 50 lbs of potatoes! Then we just have to figure out where and how we are going to store them. It is so dry here that we are not sure how long they will last in our crawl space, but we have to give it a whirl in order to find out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as the saying goes. In case you were wondering...yes we got our seeds, our live grape plants, and the red raspberries plants! Brandon is going to build a fence outside of the yard to plant the corn...and hopefully the horse can not get in! Oh, we are so excited and can already taste the tomatos! Hopefully, we will have enough produce to can, and eat fresh. We are not sure at how much we really need, but this is our practice year. Next year we will have a better idea and we will have gained more knowledge at gardening. |
