First Snow of the Year

Posted in Around the Homestead

Sunday morning we woke up to the first snowfall of the year.  It was beautiful!  The snow covered the ground like a clean, blanket.  I personally love the snow...it is fresh, clean, and peaceful.
For the kids it is a time of war.  When it snows it is that time of year for the kids to attack one another with snowballs.  It is a way for them to get back at each other for the things of the previous year.  It is revenge.  They can hardly wait for us to tell them that they can go out and the fight can begin.  Even the little kids get excited about the thought of hurling big snowballs at their siblings heads, backs, and maybe if they are lucky the face!  So, they all go and get on their battle attire which is socks for gloves(we need to remember to buy gloves), heavy coats, hats, pants, boots(although some of the kids no longer fit in theirs...must remember to get some more boots), and a huge smile upon their faces.  I hear them talking excitedly about how they are going to get each other with the biggest snowball ever, and then when each one is ready they head for the door.  I look out the window and what do I see?  Why snow flying through the air of course!  The kids are running all over the place, the snow is flying, the laughter is so loud that I am almost certain that the neighbors can hear it, and I am laughing at the sight I see before me.  At one point I see Tristen take off running as if his life depended on it, and Taylor running after him with the biggest snowball I have ever seen!  I saw Taylor throw it, but I couldn't see if he hit his running target or not.  Later on the kids all fell to the ground and made some snow angles.  Oh, yes it is a war, but a fun one!
We lost our power at about 8am and it didn't come back on until almost noon.  Now, I have a question, and perhaps someone can answer it for me.  Why does everyone have to have a drink of water and go to the bathroom as soon as the power goes out?  I am puzzled at that one, and I think I may always be.  So, we didn't have water for a bit, and we realize that we really need to either get solar power, wind mills, or a generator so our cistern will pump while the electricity is out.  Just another thing to add on to the list for the homestead.
Brandon made it home at about 11pm.  Now if it would have been me driving of course I would have gotten stuck somewhere on our road...that is just how it goes for me.  Brandon, on the other hand, well he must have wings or something because he never gets stuck.
I wish I would have remembered we have a digital camera so I could have posted some pictures of the Williams Snowball Fight, but alas my pregnant brain is slow.  Oh well, at least I have the memories in my head.  When I think about the smiles upon the face of my children...well it makes me feel all warm and cozy inside.

This is the first time I read your blog, and I just wanted to welcome you to the HSB. My kids would love to have a snowball fight, but unfortunatly we don't get much snow in south Louisiana.
