From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Friday, May 2, 2008 - BUNNIES!!

Posted in Animals

I lost a duckling today so we are down to 7.  I may replace it should I find ducklings in the farm store in the next couple weeks.

I had a litter of mini lops born tonight... Oreo had 10!  That doe has the biggest litters.  Last time she had 9 and they all survived.  Allie (crossbreed) had a litter of 8.  So along with Belle's litter (born yesterday) we have 16 mini lop kits and 8 crossbreeds with 2 does yet to kindle.

Tomorrow, friends are coming to pick up three bunnies from Oreo's previous litter so that will make some room for our latest arrivals.

I hope it warms up soon.  Its been rainy and cold.  The wind was horrible today.  I can't wait for spring to come.  I really  want to get started in the garden.  Hopefully the warm weather will come.

Carol

You have such interesting things going on at your homestead! We are in the midst of breeding rabbits (havanas) for the first time. I know you will understand our pain and joy in our experiences the past few days, in losing/gaining kits.

Blessings,
Keri

yes, it can be tough sometimes. I have to say we have been very lucky. We have real good does/mothers. I thought about splitting Oreo's litter and giving a kit or 2 to Marshmellow (doe who kindled today and has 4) but Marshmellow counts her babies... last time I gave her a foster, she kicked it out of the nest eventhough I put vicks on her nose so she couldn't tell. Its funny to watch her count, her head bobs over each baby.

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 is our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
