From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Monday, April 28, 2008 - Moving day for critters

Posted in Farm

Today we were busy prepping the farm for the moving of poultry.  Rich cleaned out a goat pen which is now a duck pen in the barn.  I need to keep the ducks there until their adult feathers come in and then they will head out to a "duck home" with a kiddie pool for swimming.  I'm hoping to pasture them in a enclosure that we move.

The layer chicks were moved into the barn chicken coop to make room for my 70 broilers that will be moving from the basement to the brooder house this week.  They are starting to roost on the cardboard of there enclosure so its time to move before they are running around in the basement!  lol

The maturnity ward for the rabbit does (5) has been set up in the garage.  I'm not sure everyone is prego but I have them setup anyway.  We have 3 purebred lops expecting (I hope) and 2 mixed breeds.  So if you need rabbits for 4H or pets, we can help you out.

Caitlin and Fozzy (highlanders) are doing well.  Today we brought them in from the patsure to make sure they knew where the water was.  Rich set up an outside water tank so they don't have to come into the barn.  I read that highlanders aren't fond of buildings no matter what the weather is like.  Here's a picture of them.  Caitlin is 14 years old and pregnant.  We should have a calf this fall.

No sign of the black cat so I'm not sure what happened to it.  We might just need to look for another cat the keep Sammie company.

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 is our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
