This has been a sad day for us on the farm. First, as I was giving Gunnie her fluids this am, I noticed lice on her. So a call to the vet and a trip to the office and Gunnnie gets treated for lice.. and then we had to do the rest of the herd, llamas, sheep and pot belly pig included. They are not so tame.
So out to the yard to do chores we go and Madison brings me a dead bantum chick from the chicken coop. OK, so chicks die.. not such a big thing. Then the unthinkable happens, as I'm watering the chicks, Rich comes in with a dead kid. It's Elvis. Gosh darn it! Rich found him face first in a watering pail. Man, I knew better too. Makes me feel awful.. I remember questioning Rich about it with Mary and her kids but the pail/bucket was short and Rich said not to worry. This time Rich used a 5 gallon pail.. big mistake. I'm not sure why I didn't question it. I really should have. We lost a very cute little goat. That is so frustrating. Lesson learned big time there! You can bet that won't happen again.
Its been about 30 hours since Gunnie was given her Dexamethasone so we are on kid watch now. Labor is suppose to start within 36-48 hours.
On a good note, Madison's 8 little ducks seem to be doing great. They sure are quiet compared to chicks!
I will update later if some new happens.

• Saturday, April 12, 2008 - Sorry
I am so sorry to hear of your accident with the water bucket! That is the way we learn, sad but true. I had a friend have the very same thing happen this spring. Since then I have tried to remember to warn new goat owners about that happening.
Keep us posted on Gunnie,
Marilyn
