From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Tuesday, January 13, 2009 - Bitterly Cold

Posted in Animals

This morning it was completely still outside.  Quite beautiful and peaceful until you stepped out the door to be greeted with a -24 degree temp.  Can we say it was "brisk" doing chores this am?  LOL  Madison was excited as school was cancelled for today.

Today, we were suppose to go and pick up a goat and some rabbit cages we saw on Craig's list.  Well, with the bitter cold, our van would not start.  So Rich tried to plug it in, in the process, broke the plug off the heater.  He managed to piece it back together and hoped it was working.  That was around 10 am.  By 2:30 pm, he had the van running and out of the snow bank it was parked in.  Since Chas was coming home shortly, Madison and him decided to make the trip without me.

Off they went.  I received a call from Rich around 5:20 pm stating they just picked up the cages and were headed to get the goat.  Oh yeah, and they wre carrying an extra passanger.  It seems there was a lionhead rabbit running around at the farm.  The guy said, if you can catch him, you can have him.  Of course, Madison couldn't turn that down.  So instead of 4 extra cages, we only have 3 as this bunny will need one of them.

My next phone call came at 5:50 pm.  They were back on the road with the billy goat in tow.  Rich was laughing as he mention, the big billy goat was only 6 months old and fairly small.  "I could have taken the car" is what he said.  But, the car wouldn't have been able to haul the cages so it was ok.

So we are waiting for Rich and Madison to return so we can meet the new critters.  I'll have more news tomorrow.

Later
Carol

All I can say is that is cold! It is supposed to be much worse here by Thursday and then better again over the weekend. As long as we have a few nice days inbetween we can handle winter.
What kind of billy goat did you get? My lion head died a couple of weeks ago.........

Hi Carol;
I just found your website last week.
My husband & I also bought an old farm back in 2006 that had been abandoned for 15 plus years and we also are trying to get it up and running.
We currently have chickens. We also raise turkeys for thanksgiving. This summer we hope to get into cattle.
Keep up the good work, I will visit often!

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 was our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
