From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Saturday, January 10, 2009 - Chickens and Rabbits

I've been talking with a gal from the southern part of the state about our colored chickens.  She wants to buy some live ones from us.  She is coming out tomorrow to look at what we are willing to sell.  So tonight we were out in the barn catching all of our roosters and deciding who stays and who goes.  We found about 20, with a couple of hens thrown in.  So the brooder house is home to these few until she comes.  I'm hoping this will cut down a bit with our feed costs and give our hens a break.. those roosters are terrible!

Madison and I traveled to a farm today to pick up a mini rex rabbit.  Oh my, what a sweet and nice looking little guy.  He should do well at the fair for Madison in 4H.  I'll have to get a picture of him.

Speaking of rabbits, I've been removing the old straw from a few of their cages each chore time as we are getting ready for some very cold weather here next week.  All the cages will need to be restuffed for added warmth.

The weatherman says we are not going to see temps above 0 for several days starting Tuesday.  UGH!!  I suppose that's when Caitlin will calve!  We are told highlander calves will not chill but at -20 degrees, I find that hard to believe.  But I guess we will see.

I think that's about it for today.

What is the new little bunny's name? What kind of chickens are you selling? Yes, 20 less will make a difference in the feed bill. It seems like the chickens make up the highest part of our feed. It is especially hard to feed them when they aren't laying enough eggs to sell!!!

I thought you and your daughter might enjoy the rabbot even more if you were to look into the topic of "house rabbits"... there are several websites on it, and books, but one way to really get to know a rabbit is to bring it inside to live. Yep, if there's only one of each sex then they will easily train to a litter box (and you can use dirt in it, so no cost there).
My daughters and I raised many rabbits- several at a time in the house and always loved it! I also raised some outdoors - so I know that the difference is remarkable- incredible.
Rabbits are as fun as having a dog for a pet- they do the craziest antics and will learn commands, even come when called. The funniest thing is when you 'tease' them with a feather or piece of crumbled paper!! They'll actually growl and attack it! If you over do it, they'll attack YOU! LOL
We had one full-sized rex named Rugburn who would jump on the counter to steal pancakes!
Have fun, and don't forget to share your experiences with your precious new bunny!

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 was our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
