From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - Highbush Cranberries, maybe?

Posted in Day to Day

Our black hen still sitting on a clutch of 11 eggs.  I'm not sure how smart she is as she has her nest at the top of the haybale stack in the barn.  I haven't figured out how she thinks she's gonna get a bunch of chicks to the ground safely.  Maybe she knows something I don't.

I also believe one of our pekin ducks has started sitting on a nest.  That would be great but I will probably have to pen her with a brooder light as these duckling would hatch around Halloween... we have snow sometimes by then.

I started making crabapple juice.  I've never tried juicing crabapples before.  I hope is works.  I have 2 large pots of apples so we will see tomorrow.

What kind of berry is this?  My guess is a highbush cranberry.  They grow on what I would call a vine that grows to about 5-6 feet tall.   They are soft and without a pit.  I haven't tasted them, it appears the birds eat them.  Anybody a berry expert?

Well, that it for now.  I'm headed to bed.
Good Night
Carol

Yep. Those look like cranberries to me. They make the best jelly. I have a recipe if you'd like.

Thanks Rhonda!! I'd love your recipe for jelly. I have several cups of these frozen.

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 is our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
