From Town to Country: A Wife's Tale

• Friday, August 15, 2008 - Ears of Corn

Posted in In the Kitchen

I knew today was going to be busy so I got started early by washing and hanging 3 loads of laundry and getting chores done before giving Karen a call about the sweet corn.  Karen said, comeon over, Bill has already picked a load or 2.

So after some quick talking getting Rich to come along.  We were off.  We arrived at Bill and Karen's to discover a old fashioned corn party!  They had several friends over and everybody was up to their elbows in corn.

After some small talk, Rich and I found ourselves in the middle of husking corn along with some others.  We met some very nice people that I hope to run into again.  Kelli, it was so nice to met you and you lovely family.

We spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon working to process corn for freezing.  We left with 42 quart bags full of yummy sweet corn!   Bill also sent home a sack of corn for me to can.  So I'll have to get to that tomorrow.

I have my cucumbers ready for processing tomorrow morning and hope to get the corn done in the afternoon.  I still have beets to do.  I also noticed tonight that the green beans and peas are just about ready for picking again.  At this time of year, it seems there isn't enough hours in the day!  Thank goodness my tomotoes are late this year.

Well, I better head to bed.  I'm hoping to have an early start tomorrow.
Carol

About Me

We've been working on the family farm for 3 years trying to get it back to a working farm. The farm was neglected for 15+ years before we took it on. The summer of 2008 is our family's first experience living in the country, so began our journey from town to country...
