This is from my journal at the farm. Its probably a late entry. I may make several entries a day to try to keep up with the backlog of entries I have:
3 more chicks hatched this am in the incubator. Then 2 more hatched over the daytime. That gives her a total of 10 chicks. We candled the remaining 4 eggs, 3 had nothing in them and the other one's shell is so thick I can't see thru it as our light isn't strong enough (its an americana egg). So Madison wants to keep that egg for a day or 2 and see what happens.
Madison has started collecting Clara's eggs for another batch. Since Lucky and Clara are our only layers at this time, she isn't going to have a lot of eggs. Right now, Lucky is hiding her eggs.
We did manage to find one of Lucky's nests. It only had 4 eggs in it so there are probably others. We have been searching for days trying to find where she's laying. She's a white crested black polish so she's a non-setter. So her eggs are going to waste if we don't find them. Its like a Easter egg hunt that we keep losing.
We readied 10 broilers for butchering tomorrow. I work tonight so I hope I can handle processing that many on little sleep. We will skin them as its quicker and most of the chicken we eat is skinned anyway. |
