Newest Member of our Family
He's 2yrs old and his name is Chief.

This is our very first horse
and we're so excited!

Our 15yr. old daughter is the only one of us who has had any experience with horses,
so she'll be able to help teach the younger ones how to handle him.
He is so sweet and gentle.
He'll be staying with his original owner until my hubby can put up a small shelter for him.
We are looking forward to having him here with us permanently very soon.
Everyone is brimming with excitement, especially my husband,
who apparently has wanted a Paint horse since he was a boy.
(Which I was unaware of until recently.
You really do learn something new every day.)

There was quite a commotion here early yesterday morning.
Our dog, Max, was hunting down something in this little area by our woods where the previous owner had left a pile of PVC. Max was jumping all around it and barking and sniffing into the ends of it. Then all of a sudden a rat (yes, a rat!) came flying out of one of the ends. Max immediately took off after it and pounced on it, more than once. He chased that thing all over the PVC pile as it kept going in and out, hoping to escape. But Max would not let up. Our other dog wasn't nearly as interested in the rat as Max was.
He finally caught it and decided to prance around the front yard with it in his mouth. I guess he was showing off his "catch" to the other two dogs, one of which belongs to a neighbor but has apparently adopted us as his new favorite family. They were all running around in circles and Max was doing a little doggie happy dance, and then started to play "Keep Away" with the other dogs. This got the kids excited and they were all hopping and yelling, I was standing on the front porch horrified, and my husband was calling out to Max, trying to get him to "sit and drop it" so he could get it away from him, but Max was so hyped up and he just kept prancing around with this rodent in his mouth. He then started tossing it on the ground toward the other dogs, staring at them, kind of daring them to try to take it. As one of them would move toward him, Max would quickly pick it up and run around, tail wagging, head shaking. It was a ridiculous site.

My husband finally got Max to lay down and then he confiscated the "prize" and disposed of it in our burn barrel.

I thought it was all over and was still having thoughts of concern, wondering whether or not we needed to take him to the vet because he just dragged a rat around the property; wondering if we did, how far away was the nearest vet located and how soon could we get an appointment; wondering if it was safe for us to touch him; wondering if I should even ever let him back in the house again? As I was standing in the middle of the kitchen doing all my wondering, two of my daughters ran into the house saying, "Mom! Dad said that, if it's o.k. with you, we could dissect the rat and try to get his skull out and keep it, because we already have him on a stick, and we'll be really careful and we won't touch him with our hands, and we'll wash really well when we're done, and..and..and we'll be really careful, please, is it o.k. with you?" I spun around and tried to calmly say, "Dad said WHAT?"
Well, after they spent the next 10 minutes trying to assure and persuade me, I began to think, "Hmm, well, this could be a good educational experience. And we haven't dissected anything yet this year. I wonder if I can find some good information online for rat dissection?"
Well, I didn't find all that much online that would be helpful. But we did find a few "Rat Dissection" videos, which turned out to not be very clear or informative. We did find some information about the rat brain, which was interesting, especially since that was really the only part the girls were able to take out and see clearly, mainly because my hubby had already started the fire in the burn barrel and the rodent was partially fried.

After dinner my 9 yr. old daughter was getting the ice cream for dessert and I heard her exclaim,
"Mom, the brain just fell out of the freezer!"
Now, that's something you don't hear your kids say everyday.
