The No "Poo" Test
Okay, after thinking about this for a few months, I have actually gone and done it. Last week I decided to start my "No Poo" Test.
I have read so many different versions of how to do this, and have just settled on using baking soda for washing and apple cider vinegar for rinsing.
I put about 5 Tbls. of baking soda into a jar and added enough water to make a watery paste, runny enough to pour onto my hair at the roots and then massage it in spreading it to the ends. I then rinsed several times with warm water. Next I rinsed with the apple cider vinegar, using the same jar, mixing it with water. It was about 1 part vinegar - 4 parts water. After pouring this on my hair, I then rinsed again with warm water.
I have to say that I didn't get that "squeaky-clean" feel when I ran my fingers over my hair while towel drying, (which my hairdresser sister-in-law has always told me was a sure sign that my hair was indeed clean). But, I'm not sure any longer that that is a good thing. I must say that combing through my hair was extremely easy, I'm guessing do to the vinegar rinse, and it did smell like a salad but that smell only lasted for about the first 15 mins. or so after I washed it.
My hair has always been "straight as a pin" with no body whatsoever, unless I work on it -- blow drying, curling iron or hot rollers, and sometimes gel or hairspray, and even then the curl falls out after a short time. But, this time with just towel drying, my hair was definitely somewhat fuller and had body, which surprised me because I had read that there would most likely be an "adjustment period" while the scalp is getting used to not being stripped of all its oils. I was concerned about having this oily, dirty looking hair for several weeks, but it hasn't happened so far.
I just washed again this evening, using the same method, and my hair is still wet, but again was so easy to comb through, and it feels and smells clean. I'm planning on using this on my younger kids this week. I think my 15yr. old daughter may need a little more time and persuasion before she tries it.
If I can get my camera working I may take a few hair pictures. :)
The crazy thing is that after my baking soda and vinegar hair washing, I reached for the Suave "Energizing Citrus" body wash to finish off my shower. Ha! What's wrong with this picture? I now have to find an alternative for all the other cleansers I use...facial, hand, body, dish, clothing, and household. Wow, I can see right now there are a lot of changes awaiting me (and my family) up ahead.

{ 10:40, 28 January 2008 } { Posted by rashel }I haven't tried the baking soda yet but have been thinking about it more lately. I have done the vinegar rinse but it seems to leave our shower floor slippery and dh does not like that. I may just have to start washing my hair in the sink if I want to use it. Keep us posted on how it is going and I would enjoy seeing hair photos!
Blessings,

It sounds funny, but it will keep your skin so soft =) I began dabbling with the natural stuff when we were still living on our own, i would love to get back into it when we find our own place.
