Men's Minds - Modesty Dress
How can I not agree with the idea of dressing modestly when it is addressed in God's Word and was taught to the early church? And, I must say that the Father has been laying this issue on my heart more and more lately, as well as a few others things which would require me to purposefully make some changes. And because of that, I am so glad to see all the blog posts regarding modesty dress. Being fairly new to this site, I don't really know all the details regarding the weekly modesty dress posts, but I've enjoyed, appreciated, and been encouraged by them. And it's interesting to see others' response/reaction to them.
In thinking about reasons why we may or may not feel we need to dress a certain way, I would just like to share something personal.
Many years ago, when my husband and I were talking about the issue of the temptations of men in general he mentioned a time when he was in a drug store and he could hear the sound of a woman's heels clicking on the floor as she walked down the aisle next to him, the sound which would be typically made by high heels. As the heel clicking got closer, it seemed to him that she may very well be turning into his aisle any moment and he was fully aware of the enemy right at the door who wanted to tempt him with sexual sin, just from that sound. You see, even the sound of the heels began to put an image of an alluring, sensual woman into his mind and he didn't want to stick around to actually encounter her just to be visually tempted as well. So he high-tailed it out of there praying all the way.
You see ladies, it's not just the choice of our blouses or skirts. There is so much more to consider. Men don't need much to set their minds off wandering into a place where the enemy wants to trap them and keep them. We can all agree that God created us as the helper to the man. Remember, it's not just to our man. I believe it's to all man and mankind. Since it's a well known fact, even in the realm of the world, that men can be quickly drawn away into sexual sin by the smallest, simplest things, wouldn't we want to make it a priority to do whatever we can to aid them in keeping their hearts and minds in the light?
It's not true that we are not responsible for the sin of others, especially when we are in some way, knowingly or not, encouraging it. We are one body in Christ, and whatever hurts one member of the body, affects the whole body. We cannot take the stand that it's not our concern what another brother, or sister, struggles with; that it's their sin, their problem. That is not the way of Christ. This is not about showing others that we belong to God, or about witnessing to someone in order to convert them. This is about perpetuating the light of Christ. It's about not causing another brother to stumble. It's about loving the body so much that we are willing to sacrifice our wants or comforts in order to aid the walk of another believer.
Another thing is not just the way we dress, but also the way we conduct ourselves. I have known several women whose dress was certainly modest, but there were other things about the way they communicated with my husband, and other men, which made me feel uncomfortable. Whether they realized it or not, they conveyed a kind of playfulness in conversation which I thought was inappropriate and which was also an attraction, and possibly a seduction, to men. I have known men who ended up falling into adultery and the relationship had started seemingly innocently because of this type of behavior.
Ladies, we are not our own, "For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body." I Corinthians 6:20. Now I know this whole passage is not specifically referring to a woman's dress, but the principle applies to all things.
Another scripture: "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood." Acts 20:28. And even though in this verse and passage Paul is speaking to the elders of the church, surely we can see the intensity, and importance, of keeping the body of Christ safe from the world, from the enemy, from sin.
I don't believe this is something we should take lightly, or look at as a preference. I believe that the way we women, and our daughters, dress and conduct ourselves is a vitally important part of the spiritual battle that is being waged against us by the enemies of God.
Let us all prayerfully consider how we can be a light and help others walk in the light and lift up the name of the Holy Christ every day, in everything we do.
"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
