Dreaming of Simplicity

The hens are laying! We have gotten eggs each day since they arrived and they have been increasing in amount each day. Obviously they will not increase much more since we only have five hens but today we have already gotten three eggs which is our record since the chickens arrived this past weekend. We are trying to get one of the hens broody and we thought we had one but she lost interest. We left an egg in the nesting box to encourage someone to come sit. So far no takers.

 I did have a scare today. It has been rainy here for about a week. Today the sun finally came out and it is hot again. I guess the chickens like to lay down in depressions in the dirt in the pen. One was laying down really flat and I thought she was dead. When I went over to the chicken yard she popped up and everyone ran over to greet me, after all I bring FOOD!

 In garden news we picked a lone strawberry from our plants yesterday. I had been taking the blossoms off since they are first year but I must have missed one. Peas are still producing nicely even though we lack sun. The rest of the garden is too wet and we need a dry spell. Have a great day all!

Congrats on getting chickens AND eggs! We also finally have chickens, and they are also Buff Orphingtons. They are so nice, they will eat out of our hands. We got ours as chicks, so it will be another 6 or 7 months before they start laying. :( But, I can't wait, we will have enough (I hope) to sell some of our eggs.
