Dreaming of Simplicity

cluck cluck, cluck cluck, cluck cluck, cluck cluck, cluck cluck, cock-a-doodle-doo!

That is what we hear in our yard as we welcome the long coming arrival of five buff orpington hens and a very stately and handsome rooster. The hens are a mix of one and two year olds. The people who we got them from said they get nice and broody and make great mothers and have had several batches of chicks from them. Our plan is to try and get them to hatch some chicks who will replace the older hens in the spring. We also are hoping to add a few more young laying hens to the flock before then if the lady will still sell us a few. The rooster was named Thomas the Tank Rooster by my four year old son who is a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine.

The garden is looking ok. Right now I am worried that the few things we have left are going to die because it has been rainy and cool for days now. We need some nice warm sun. I have blossoms on lots of my plants but the plants are still rather small, I do not know how that will work out.

Thankfully since my garden is a flop we have the CSA to fall back on. I have been enjoying the fresh produce each week. It has been a nice surprise and I have liked making up meals to use the items we have gotten from the farm. We added a cheese share onto our farm share and we will now be getting locally made goat's cheese in our share each week. The cheese has looked excellent so we had to get in on that action! If you are in an area with community supported agriculture programs and do not have a farm of your own I highly suggest checking one in your area out. It is great to support local agriculture and the fresh food can not be beat.
