Here's a GREAT idea from a Dayton, Ohio area homeschool mom. This is so creative and I'm sure that you and your family will have a blast and learn about the blessings of the LORD at the same time. Here is a life-lesson they will not soon forget!

I just had to share our exciting lesson from school on Wednesday.
I had the kids make Chocolate chip cookies but did not tell them what they were making. They had to get the supplies one at a time & mix based on how much I told them to put in of each. So first sent them for a bowl, a spatula, then sugar etc. I did not have the chocolate chips visible. This was an exercise showing how God knows what he's making in our lives if we follow his plan & do what he's asking us to do. After we mixed all of the rest of the ingredients except the chocolate chips. This was the great part.
I used the mixer to represent them & God. The mixer is useless if it's not plugged into it power source. We talked about what powers the mixer, electricity & where do we get our power, Jesus. But the mixer can not fulfill it's designed purpose if the beaters are not attached. We turned the mixer on unplugged, it could do nothing, just like us if we are not plugged into God through Bible reading, prayer, Christian community etc. Then we plugged in but just sat it on the table, so the mixer would come on & was connected to power but it was not serving. If we don't use the tools God has designed in us we can't do his will. The mixer was turned on & you heard the power flowing into it but it was not mixing. Then of course with the beaters attached the mixer could fulfill it's design just like when we use our tools & talents we can fulfill God's purpose through our lives
OK lastly we had the batter mixed up & it tasted good & the mixer had worked well but then I got out the chocolate chips. I then tossed a few on the table as unexpected blessings that God wants to send into our lives. The cookies would have been good just the way they were but the chocolate chips made them extra good. I saved some chocolate chips that I tossed at the kids through the rest of our lessons. Some times I tossed then some when they asked, like God wants to bless up when we pray & ask. But with Joey who had walked away from this"God Lesson" I hit him occasionally with one chip at a time because I said that was Gods still caring even when we turn our backs because God wants to bless us. Eventually he asked for chips & I gave him a bunch explaining that was how God just waits to pour blessings into our lives when we ask him into our hearts.
We talked about what if we put different ingredients in to the cookies or switched the amounts like put 3/4 cup salt & 1/2 teaspoon sugar. That would be like catching a quick Bible but really adding TV or video to our lives. Or 2 c baking soda & 1 teaspoon of flour, like a lot of friends & riding bikes & just a little church. I explained that all of the ingredients can be good just like all of the mentioned activities can be good but it has to be proportional to make it a successful recipe. We have to balance our life in much the same way.
It was so visual & really worked! I don't know if any of you could use a similar object lesson with your kids or as a family night activity. You can have great discussion while the cookies bake & then there's a snack to share & you'll never look at chocolate chip cookies in the same way. At least I won't.
Have a blessed day,
Debbie Jones
