Happiness in the Kitchen
I LOVE working and puttering around in my kitchen. I just re-arranged my spice cabinet and filled some washed-n-saved jars with newly bought spices and some of my favorite spice mixes that I whip up. At one of my favorite bulk stores (mentioned in a post below) the spices and herbs come in sealed plastic bags, so I've gotten in the habit of saving and washing out jars - mustard jars, salsa jars, mushroom jars, etc. - filling them with the spices/herbs and then labeling them. I save the larger jars for my favorite spice blends. 2 of my favorites are:
All-Round Seasoning
1 c. dried parsley
1/2 c. dried dill weed
1/4 c. dried chives
1/2 c. dried oregano
1/4 c. dried thyme
~ You can mix this in cream cheese for a dip or spread.
~ I use this on just about any kind of meat, in pasta sauces, soups, herb bread mixes, butter...
Fresh Veggie Seasoning
8 Tb. dried parsley
4 Tb. dried chives
1 ts. dried marjoram
1 ts. dried oregano
1 ts. dried thyme
1. ts. dried basil
1/2 ts. celery seed
~ This is GREAT sprinkled on any sort of veggie: tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers; or veggies fixed in your wok.
~ If you add this to oil/vinegar or a vinaigarette dressing...awesome!
Just the other night, it was a little too far away from that last pay-check and the family wanted pasta. Well...I had no sauce! Now, I KNOW that MANY of you are SO FAR ahead of me in my culinary skills, but I was delighted that the pasta sauce I made up was a HIT!!
Here's what I used (and looks like I'll use again!):
2 cans of Red Gold crushed tomatoes
a few VERY liberal shakes of garlic powder
a few VERY liberal shakes of my All-Round Seasoning (above)
and several freshly sliced mushrooms and sliced black olives
~Nothin' to it, and they all loved it! I was VERY excited!
Like I tell my girls...It's the little things in life that mean so much!
