Wanna Be a Steader!

What's in a Name?

11:56, 2005-Dec-29 .. Posted in Of Interest... .. 13 comments .. Link

Ever wonder why each of us have chosen the blog names we have?  I just love reading through everyone's names.  What creative people...don't you just want to invite everyone over for a good hot cup or coffee, tea or cider and pick their brains?  I LOVE good conversation with friends...especially when I can laugh and learn something.

I haven't commented much yet, but from what I've seen, you all are great conversationalists!

I would love to know why some of you chose the blog names  you chose...so let me know!

For myself...I think "wanna be one" pretty-much says it all!    I am a 1st-generation Buckeye, bred of Kentucky stock.  My dear hubby and I have "settled" for small town living until we can get farther out into the country.  (He was raised on a farm and misses it.)  Oh, there are still deer that come onto our property when you least expect it...bobcats, coyotes, red tail hawks, kestrals (sparrow hawks), owls, woodpeckers...but I would like a little more distance between our neighbors and us.  I grew up spending many summers at my grandparents' and aunts' and uncles' farms, riding horses mostly!  But one of my favorite places to visit was my Aunt Nellie and Uncle Autie's little KY farm.  My mom is the baby of 14, so this aunt was the 2nd oldest and was the only one who didn't leave KY.  Going the Nellie and Autie's was like visiting Laura Ingalls Wilder!

They didn't have indoor pluming until the 80's, just about 6 years before Nellie died.  Nellie still cooked on her big, black coal/wood burning stove (biscuits the size of saucers!!!!!!!!), churned her butter, they milked their cows (nothing like squirting a cat in the face!) and did everything else the "old" way.  I loved going past the natural bridge and down the winding one-lane dirt roads to get to their little house.  They lived on top of a foothill that overlooked an incredibly beautiful "holler;"  there was nothing like it in the fall!

Then there was the house itself...Uncle Autie built it as a young man and their many children were raised there.  The BEST part about the house was going upstairs...not being a trained home builder, there were a few...eh..."oddities."  The best one was that the stairs ended at the upstairs WALL...you nearly had to jump off, either right or left, into which ever room you wanted to go in.  I don't even want to know how they got furniture up there...but they did!  But what a cozy, inviting, warm, wonderful house that was.  I only wish my girls could've experienced it.  What precious memories...what precious people.

I would love to know about your names and/or hear about some of your precious country memories.

Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><

Nicknames

I have lots of country memories, i grew up on a farm and my dad just decided that he was old enough to move into town this year(he is 79). My parents split up and I moved off the farm at 8, but my heart never left it.
As for my nickname, one of our Christmas traditions is to leave a box under the tree for Jesus and place in it a piece of paper that describes what we think Jesus wants from us for His Birthday. Mine was to "be anxious for nothing" and also to have a meek and quiet spirit. It seemed to me that if my screen name for everything is BeAnxious4nothing, then it is a very frequent reminder about what I should be working on in my spiritual life.
I am sure that there are a lot of interesting stories about nicknames, I am looking forward to reading your responses.

Well, it is pretty obvious (to me) ... I am a proud grandma of the two prettiest, smartest, nicest girls in the whole world (am I prejudiced?). And I spin (some people say I spin in life - from one project to another - and I'm pretty dizzy) - I have taught spinning and weaving as a profession as well as a hobby (obsession). And my two latest students? My granddaughters - young 7 year Jessica did about 2 yards the other day when I treadeled for her. Hence the name - and proud of it!

"In His Hands". My life is In His Hands and whatever I make of it and where ever I go, it is all up to Him. My story tells of how God has been incontrol of everything and for this season He is allowing me to be healthy enough to start doing again around my home and hopefully outside this year. I get up every day and remember I am in His hands and what am I going to do with my day. Waste it? or Make good use of it?
I love it here at homesteadblogger and can't wait to see what I learn from everybody.
Much love and blessings,
Pat in Tenn

Hi Kim!

What a treasure to have known such people! You are blessed.

New Harvest means that the old ways are becoming new again! So many of us are yearning for the creation-centered life the Lord has provided, we just need to "re-learn" the skills and knowledge required. This forum is going to be a great place to acquire some of that knowledge.

You'll have to come on over to South of the Gnat Line and "read for yourself" and I'll bet you can figure out the why's on my blog/column's name.......wouldn't have anything to do w/being southern or being female or being "sassy" or silly or ...... well, you'll just have to decide for yourself.

My sister 'n law lives in Dublin and our niece (her daugher) went to Miami of Ohio. Heaven help us - they are obsessed OSU Buckeyes......they went to the Fiesta Bowl and everything. I have to remind her that she DID grow up in the South......LOL!

Enjoyed reading your posts - have a great weekend! Come visit me anytime ~

The Queen of Quite Alot

04:47, 2006-Jan-7 .. Posted by Dalyn
sounds pretty arrogant- but it's actually not. I used to feel so overwhelmed with everything and everybody I was responsible for everyday. I would get so discouraged and tired in my mind long before my body:) I read an article by Nancy Campbell about being the Queen of your home and being called God's Queen in Songs Of Solomon, and it changed my whole attitude. That verse is from a version I'm not to familiar with, but I just love it. In other translations it's "spouse" or "bride" but queen does sound nice and we are His spouse and bride and He is a King!
So...now I am positive about my responsibilities instead of overwhelmed!

Why Sisyphus Acres?

03:18, 2006-Jan-10 .. Posted by vgauthier
We've named our homestead Sisyphus acres in honor of my father, who reminds me so much of mythical Sisyphus. Having moved here last winter, my father's first North Country winter, he was bound and determined to keep our tar driveway black and down to the tar throughout the season. He toiled daily, removing every bit of snow and ice from the surface, only to have wind and moutain flurries recover his work each morning. He never wavered, and set out daily determined to triumph over his foe...a north country winter.

My father is not the knave described here, but his ceaseless toiling so reminds me of Sisyphus' eternal sentence, and is the primary reason why we are naming our little spot here Sisyphus Acres. I decided my first blog should explain the name of our little homestead. The Myth of Sisyphus is written here: http://www.mythweb.com/encyc/entries/sisyphus.html . Enjoy the mythology lesson (lol), Val

My Username

I didn't see this before. Well, since you'll NEVER guess how I got my username, I'll tell you.

Once upon a time, there was a lady named Lena, she gave birth to me and decided to name me Amber. Plus, being computer illiterate, (got my first and only computer in Oct '05) and never blogged or even knew what a blog was, I thought you were suppost to use your name (at HSB). I was just lazy and uncreative (is that a word?) and decided to use the same name.

God Bless,
Amber
