If you homeschool, or know someone who does, please read Spunky's great article refuting the bogus "arguments" of a pastor who is against homeschooling at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/spunkyhomeschool/135712/ .
Here's my 2 cents concerning what the "good" Dr. Tony Beam of North Greenville College in South Carolina had to say about US...
He begins by asking why are we all so mad when people suggest that our troops "cut and run" out of Iran when that's what WE, has homeschoolers, are doing with the public schools?
Well, like Spunky said and like I said in a previous article/post (see: "A Solid Foundation in a Shaky World"), SEND ADULTS! Send in Christian teachers, administrators and board members - NOT the kids! Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego we YOUNG MEN (not children) who had obviously been taught in the Scriptures AT HOME. They were NOT small children and their home training - homeschooling, if you will - prepared them to stand up against the pagan king and stand up for the LORD.
Small children are NOT emotionally prepared to hold their ground, nor do they think quickly on their feet - much less, avoid physical threats and temptations. As Spunky put it so well, "A child's role is NOT as a redeemer." WELL SAID! She also notes well that even Jesus was under the authority of His earthly parents. In Luke 2:51 & 52 we read: "Then He went down to Nazareth with them [Joseph and Mary] and was obedient to them. But His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." So many take issue with the "missing years" of Jesus' life between the ages of 12 and 30 - what was He doing? Most likely, like ALL the other good Jewish boys, He was being homeschooled: protected from the bad elements of the culture and trained at home! Jesus was 30 when He began His earthly ministry. Isn't HE our ultimate Role Model?
Dr. Beam makes the point that in John 17:15-18 "He [Jesus] specifically asked God NOT to remove us from the world but to prepare us for engaging the world by protecting us from the evil one and sanctifying us in the truth." (emphasis mine - KW) The way I see it, Dr. Beam just made a GREAT argument FOR homeschooling!! Isn't the very best place to protect AND prepare our children AT HOME?
What about Deut. 6:6&7 ? "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up..." HOW does that happen if your children spend 20,000+ hours of their most formative and impressionable years AWAY from home?!
HOMESCHOOLING IS A REVIVAL!! We're NOT retreating - no cut and run here - we're regrouping, preparing and advancing for the sake and cause of Christ!! AMEN!
