journals for ds6 and dd3

While teaching the ladies from church how to make soap a month ago, we talked a lot.  one sister is living with her MIL, and they both came.  This young sister has 4 children under the age of seven and has breast cancer.  they moved here for treatment and family help.  anyway, she was saying that in Oregon, from whence they moved, the kindergarten children write in journals every day.
Well, says I, why cannot my 6-yo son do the same.  so we instituted journal writing into our school day.  It was a delimna for a few days - do I let him write what he wants the way he wants (journal) or dictate the proper grammer and spelling (formal writing)?  I compromised.  I let him pick the topic and the general form, but I change it so that he is using proper grammer and correct spelling.  And he re-writes it if it is not written neatly.  He can write all by himself, so he writes on blank lined paper, you know the easily-ripped, kinda-brownish-with-blue-solid-and-dotted-lines for beginning writers.  I remember using it when I was in elementary school.
But for my dd3, I had to come up with something else for her journaling.  I remembered a great site I used briefly with my son for writing letters to family when he was small.  It is perfect.  I write the date on the first line, let her dictate the topic and rough sentence, then I adjust it so it fits into the form for the page.  She traces the dotted letters.  When she is done, we place it in the back of a 3-hole green paper folder.  ds6 has a blue one.
I love this - we will have 1-3 sentence snapshots of their childhood forever.  from their own point of view.  What a great way to start journal-keeping.

ps - this site has other cool stuff too.
