my son is working on the back of Math-U-See Alpha. He is on lesson 27 or so, but since he started subtraction, I have only had him doing the review pages; he understood it so well it would have been torture to make him do EVERY problem. So I figured the review would give him enough practice without the monotony of repetitive work HE ALREADY KNOWS.But I bought the Beta book a few weeks ago so we can just transition into the next book without a break. it covers double-digit addition and subtraction. I am looking forward to starting it. But SIX-YEAR OLD BUG is going around spouting MULTIPLICATION FACTS that he has FIGURED OUT ON HIS OWN!!!! by adding 8 to itself four times, then saying "Mom, 8x4 is 32" It goes against every bit of me to skip to single multiplication right now. I want him to follow the books, after all don't the makers of textbooks know the best way to teach math, and in what order? and - I remember very clearly learning the times tables IN THIRD GRADE - I was EIGHT!!!!! surely six is too young for this? but that brings me back to Why am I Homeschooling? Why am I doing this, if not to - at least in some measure - take things at HIS speed and HIS interest level. and if he is ready for multiplication, why should I stand in his way. it is not like adding multiple-digit numbers (346+826) helps with multiplication. at least not the basic times tables. when we have that, we can come back and learn multiple digit addition and subtraction. and do multitple-digit multiplication and division at the same time. why not? So off I go to order the Gamma book - and while I am at it, the Primer for dd3..... Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 52 of 206 } { Next Page } |
