square foot garden boxes - for free!!!!

I have been taking the kids out every morning to work on the garden. I have been getting my SFG boxes from a fencing company - they are the untreated and rough frames in which the fencing is trucked to them; they throw out this wood, already nailed into 4'x4'x4" squares. I am stacking two to get the 6" of soil I need, and using hte metal strip stapled around them to make the square foots (feet?) on the inside. I then place a third frame on top of that with chicken wire stapled (recycled from the boxes) to keep out or cats and dog, who thought my SFG boxes were a latrine.... (speaking of my kittens, do you remember when we got them? well, we took all four animals into the vets on the same day to get fixed - no way I wanted 3 sets of kittens all at once. neuter the dog, spay the kittens. well the vet got Tiger onto the table, "I thought you said the kittens were supposed to be spayed" "Yup," said the nurse, "why?" "Tiger is a male." LOL! I about died laughing when they told me this. they family who had given us the kittens wanted to keep all the males, so they were pretty careful about giving us females. the vet said sometimes the parts don't drop till later, so that might be it. I never looked. why should I? I just believed the family..... glad it wasn't Princess,though... might have had to change her name! LOL!)anyway, back to the garden update. I have enough frames to make 4 4x4 boxes, and I also have about 10 4'x2' boxes that are 6" high, so I am placing those around the border of the flower garden. I am going to use those for my berries - strawberries (planted, and even surviving, which is odd for me - I feel that I haven't had any survive since we moved!), raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. and then I have a few 2'x1' frames that I am trying to decide what I am planning - I am thinking maybe stack all four up and do carrots, or maybe do a patio/indoor salad garden for the winter. anyway, I should be getting a nice harvest next year. if I can find a solution to the grasshopper problem. and do NOT suggest chickens. dh has said under no circumstances are we going to get chickens any time soon. I think they would be great - take care of the grasshoppers, provide compost for our garden (instead of critters eating our garden, other critters would be feeding our garden. I like the symmatry), and hey! added bonus, we would have healthy, fresh free eggs. oh, and I could feel good about throwing away uneaten toast or other baked goods. dh has also asked that I not pester him about chickens either. so we need another grasshopper solution, if anyone has any ideas. I am going to try creating a barrier between the open grassy fields and our garden by killing the grass for 8 feet next to our garden - the length of a blue tarp being held down by the rocks I find while prepping spots for my SFG boxes. anyway,it is late, I need to get to bed. g'night!
