schedule change to noon "dinner"

okay, we want to change our schedule around a bit.... let me explain... here is our "outside world" schedule starting, well this week and next, depending on the activity.  some things are for the whole family, karate and play rehearsal for ds5, dance (2 seperate classes), chess club (at our house) and piano for both ds5 and dd3; scouts for dh who is a pack leader for the Webalos
Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday
9-12 church
5-6:30 karate 1-3 chess club 10-11 piano 1:30-3:30 play rehearsal
(1-4 church in January)
6:30-8 scouts 3:15-5 dance 5-6:30 karate

I want to eat one big meal as a family every day.  I think an evening dinner is kind of out of the question because of all the evening stuff - and it is different stuff every day!  and different times too!  so I am thinking an hour or so within the time of 11am-1pm, which would give us fexibility to not start till 12:15 (on Sundays) or be done by 12:30 (on sundays after january and on wednesdays).  it also does not interrupt nap time.
the problem we are having is adjusting our minds to this soooo un-american schedule.  dh works at home, so in theory this should not be difficult, but he does work with a small handful of other guys (also working out of their homes) who observe the traditional american workday routine.  so we have to make sure that there are no virtual meetings that happen or virtual emergancies....
and, what about breakfast - do I just serve small continental-type breakfast at 6:30-7 when we eat so we are ready for a big noon meal?  and save the big pancake and waffles type american smorgausboard of breakfast for rotation in the "noon meal"?

any thoughts?  anyone?  has anyone done this?  anyone lived in Europe where this is the norm that can give us some pointers?

Interesting Idea. Since I can bee of no help (and we usually eat 'late' around here, not only to scheduling but to my own serious lack of planning :( (Church here until December is 3-6pm. 8-11am in Jan). I hope someone gives you some Good Ideas to help solve your dilemma. Good Luck. Sincerely, Brenda

Wow your family is BUSY! I don't personally have any help for you here, but I just happen to be reading a blog by rellamom this week in which it has her menu planner for the week. She does the same thing, having her big meal at lunch and a smaller meal at supper because her husband works late. You might ask her for pointers! Good luck with working around the scheduling, etc!! I think it's great that although the kids are so busy, you still want to keep the tradition of eating around the family table.

To eat or not to eat . . .

I personally think that having a big noon meal is much better than having a big evening meal. I wish I could pull that off, but my husband works long days. So this brings me to "How did you get to have your husband home???" I wanna know. We really want daddy home, but haven't figured out how to do that yet.

As far as meal planning - I think a regular breakfast is still ok. You may not need steak and eggs first thing in the morning, but a good healthy breakfast is still needed to jumpstart your day. My granola recipe is a very filling breakfast idea! Don't worry - they'll still be hungry at lunch. And if you wanted to pull off a noon breakfast-type meal - go for it! Make it a brunch and add fresh fruit, sausage balls and dessert. Yum!

I think you lunch idea is great. Keep us posted how it goes.
