okay, here is the story. last night she was playing, then choking. I immediatly went over and tried to get it out of her mouth. ds5, Bug, says she put something black in her mouth. she wasn't NOT breathing, so I didn't try the heimlich. after a few minutes she was breathing fine, but still crying. oh yeah, she threw up during this, but no object. since she was breathing fine, I figured whatever it was would be coming out in a diaper today or tomorrow and didn't think about it again. she slept really well last night, better than normal so that I kept waking up to find out if she was still breathing! this morning she was really clingy, figured her throat was sore from the object scraping her. she nursed just fine, as she had all night. then we sat down to breakfast. I gave her a few scrambled eggs, a large strip of a bagel to gnaw on, and a strawberry piece. she ate a few bites and started to cry. so I took her out of her highchair and started nursing her at the table. that is when she threw up the eggs, strawberry and milk. okay, something is not right here. I called the pediatrician, and since it is the state holiday, got the oncall doctor who told me to take her to Primary Children's Hospital. now PCH is 1.5 hours away, so I asked about the local hospital. she said PCH has the tiny equipment for tiny bodies. so we loaded up the kids and drove to SLC. of course, being July 24th, there is a HUGE parade in downtown SL, and the children's hospital was on the other side of town from the freeway. so we had to take a circituitous route there, avoiding parade and marathon runners. my SWIL met us there and took the older kids to her house for the day. they did x-rays and found a TIE-TAC lodged in baby's esophagus! it still had the back piece on it so there was not a sharp point, which is good. an object thrown at a parade in the last week or two, and left on the floor by Bug. I couldn't nurse her because they wanted to take her into surgery, and she had not eaten since about 7:30 am. by the time we got into the OR, it was 5:30 pm. she did so good! she was starving, but allowed us to distract her with wagon rides, walking in the gardens, playing with toys, and thank heavens for my baby wrap!! we had to eat in shifts so she didn't see the food and get angry for not sharing.it took about 20 minutes in the OR, and they brought us the "object." when she came out of the anesthesia, they called us in and I immediatly let her latch on to nurse. she was much happier with me then! anyway, we have been very blessed, since it did not go down her breathing tubes, it did not puncture her esophagus, it was easy to take out, she has not had any complications from the surgery, and we are home tonight. well, at my mom's anyway, in case her pediatrician wants to do a follow up tomorrow, we will not have to drive back down. (We have kept our doctor in SLC cuz he is very understanding of our parenting choices - co-sleeping, no vax, homeschooling, etc. LOVE my pediatrician!) Thank you for your prayers.
