my practical jokes

I am not a physical practical joker (aka musketman aka scarecrow), but I have pulled off my share of verbal practical jokes.there was the time I was sitting at the kitchen table with my parents and sibs, and I managed to convince my brother that church was changing from 3 hours every sunday to 4. my parents sat there while I gave him the reasons for it, the rational behind it, and the schedule for it. I was trying sooooo hard not to laugh, but when he went downstairs, it was with the discouraging thought that he had to spend FOUR hours sitting in a button-up white shirt and a tie. as soon as he left the room, however, I could no longer hold it in, and bust up laughing. he heard me and came back up, this time dismayed that I had played him. and then, the summer after my sophemore year at college, I was home for the summer, but living at a friend's house, I got a job at the same ice cream parlor as my 2 younger sibs. being in high school, they still lived at home. well, I was sitting in the break room with J, my bro, and we were talking about mom and dad. one of our co-workers heard us and said "you guys brother and sister?" but in a disbelieving tone. We told her we were indeed sibs, and she didn't believe us. she got out an employee list, and, while our last name was the same (a very rare name, like only 1000 people in the whole US of A), we had different phone numbers. She told us we were lying, which immediatly got my back up, and I told her that not only were we sibs, but twins. Now, I am tall, very skinny (didn't hit 110 lbs and able to give blood till I was nearly 20) and fair of skin and hair. my bro and sis are both short, dark hair, B (my sis) is skinny and petit and fair skinned, but J is short, stout, and olive complexioned. we all have the same shade of blue eyes (and in baby pictures, the same mouth). so, this girl says "you don't even look alike! twins look alike." so I proceeded to tell her all about how fraternal twins are different from identical, and how if twins are boy and girl, they are no more alike than any bro and sis (all true, right) and my brother sits back and adds his own bit to the convincing that we are indeed twins. by the end of our break, we had her convinced that we were twins. I have this feeling that J and I pulled off some other verbal jokes together, and I am sure even B has joined in. Her nieces and nephews all know not to believe anything she says unless they get a confirmation from either their mom or B's husband (when she is NOT in the room, otherwise they play along with her, like telling them that fish are chicken that live in the water). this did backfire on me once. I was very much against getting married. I hadn't seen anyone happy with it, and really enjoying it. I didn't want it. In my church group for young single adults, everyone knew about these feelings of mine, and thought I was a bit batty, but they laughed with me at my jokes. so, come this one bbq activity, and unbeknownst to anyone, I had been engaged for about a month to a young man from NY. I had not told anyone, not my family or anyone, and no ring (I hate diamonds). another story. so we are sitting there and one young lady, sitting next to her fiance, asked me when I was getting married. I said, "well, I am engaged now." "No, you are not." "I am too." and I proceeded to tell everyone the truth of the situation. they had even met him when he came out to visit and propose. not believing me (too many encounters?), they asked J. WHO DIDN"T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT. "A says she is engaged. Is she?" "Oh, yeah, a guy from NY," was his response. very casually. too casually. they all suspected they were being played. "He doesn't know! I have not even told my family yet!" anyway, no one was about to believe that I was engaged. by the end of the night, they were grudgingly believing, but my brother had not helped at all that time. you wanna know the sad (or maybe the GOOD) part? the few times I played poker in college for pennies or candy, I could NOT bluff to save my life. I cannot lie, but I sure can spin a good yarn! My kids know that I tease them a lot, and use their own knowledge of me and the world around them to be skeptical when I try to play them. Bug got me the other day when he did it back to me. how I laughed. I speak (and write) wryly, tongue in cheek, and usually with a mischievious gleam in my eye. so if I write something that seems like I am offended or like I might be offensive, just remember, I am not. I rarely am, and write very seriously about the topic. mostly, I enjoy laughing and fun, and let a lot of things run off my back like water on a duck. I will try to remember to add "LOL" or some such when I am having a laugh at you. just so you know in this cyber world of miscommunication.
