sick kitten? help please

8-week old kitten, Tiger, seems to be having a problem.  she has a red and swollen anus-region.  it doesn't seem to be tender, nor is she favoring it excessively.  she is acting like a normal playful, rolling and wrestling kitten.  i do not know if she is having diahrea (with three kittens it is hard to tell) although I think someone is having softer stools, cuz they are all eating the same food, and some seems softer and lighter in color than the others.  I really do not want to take her to a vet if this is something easily fixed or costing too much money  - I got these cats for working animals (mousers) not as pets (although, they are that by default of having children).

when I did a search online, there were comments that basically castrated anyone who would even think about NOT shelling out $300 to get it fixed at the vets (someone even said one needs "pet insurance" for this kind of thing!).  frankly, the only thing I am planning to pay for at the vets is fixing and dog vacs.  my only concern is that if it is contageous, and spreads to the other cats and/or the dog.  I am not heartless.  If this kitten were to die, I would be sad indeed, more for my little dd3 because it is "her" kitten - she named it, but I am not a pet shelter nor is my hard-earned money for a working kitten.  am I terrible?  I believe that the Lord gave us animals to help us and to teach us certain truths; and I think that we ought to be merciful to them and helpful when we can, but paying thousands of dollars for chemo for an animal that is only expected to live 10-12 years anyway is excessive.  a couple hundred for vaccines and "fixing", okay....   The Lord expects us to be wise stewards of the things he has given us - animals and money.  I guess we need to find the middle there.

anyway, can anyone help me out here?  what is it, what can I do?

My advice is too be patient. Put a little neosporin on the area if you think it might help. And pray that you be given the wisdom to know what to do that God's will be done ultimately. We had to put a cat down because I wasn't going to put hundreds of dollars into insulin shots for a 10yr old cat that had been a child's pet since the age of 4. But we had an understanding vet and helped the child understand (even if at 18 she's still not real happy about it). I think everything will be fine though. Sincerely, Brenda

No idea what the problem might be, and I agree with you on not spending thousands on animal care, but if it turned out to be something more serious, if it were me, I'd spend the money to have him/her put to sleep. I don't believe in letting animals suffer if we have the means to prevent it. I know the difference between working animals and pets, but again, you don't want needless suffering OR the spreading of disease if it's something contagious.

I also know what you mean about other on-line places fairly slaughtering you over such an attitude!! Some people, as we know, see animals as little people in fur and expect the world to treat them as such. Not the same as stewardship!

As the other commenter said, give it some time and just keep an eye on the kitten. But, if push comes to shove, at least have the vet take a look.

You might try worming...

We had a kitten last year that didn't survive and it had a red swollen anus too. When I researched online, it seemed like things pointed to needing to worm her. It said that the kitten was licking and causing the redness because of the worms.

We didn't take the kitten to the vet, but my husband explained things to the vet and they gave us some special wormer. Unfortunately the kitten died the day after the wormer. I'm not sure what happened, but it seems like it had something to do with worms anyway. I doubt the vet could have done anything more for a reasonable price.

Maybe your kitty will have better luck though. :o)
