a tribute to a good friend

I have a friend.  she was my sister's freshman roommate at college, but K and I clicked so well and are so much alike, my sister felt like she was living with me again (to her horror)!  We had the same sense of humor, the same desire to speak proper english, the same need  hunger to learn...  we both liked to dress modestly, and we both have a deep belief in God.  I was a senior, she a frosh (since it was a women's college, we disliked the term "freshman", and "freshwoman" sounds awful!).  we liked to read the cheap romance novels that abound on a college campus full of women, and we would warn the other about the passages to skip.
K is from Pakistan, a brilliant, smart, beautiful woman.  she was educated in the British system, and so was able to skip a year of college because of "A-levels," although I never understood exactly what those are.  She spoke English as her second language, and I think that is the reason she was terror on those who spoke it poorly as a first language.  she had no accent, just a soft sweet voice and a ready laugh.  she was petite, and she and my sister wore the same size - which thing is very important in a roommate, ya know?
near to the end of the year, we took a trip to NYC, about 5 hours away.  the big group split after our scholarly persuits, some to shop, some to eat, some to play.  my sister wanted to shop in the Big Apple (she is city girl all the way through!), but didn't particularly want to hang with the other "shoppers;"  I think she would have prefered the company of me, K, and W, but our plans were to play in Central Park in May; a very boring way to spend an afternoon in New York City.  anyway, the three of us laughed our way to Central Park, K translating the comments of a Pakistani pretzel vendor addressed to W: "something you would read in a bad romance novel" was all she would say.  they laughed at me for something too, although I cannot remember what it was.  something about a boy, I am sure.  at CP, with the trees all in blossom, oh, how beautiful it was.  three beautiful young women, modest, clean, laughing and able to have fun without stimulants, just ourselves!  I do not remember much about that afternoon except being with 2 of my best friends, and knowing that I had to enjoy it cuz I would be graduating in a few weeks, W was headed for a year abroad in Israel, and K would be back to Wells in the Fall.  we climbed trees and watched a bridal party take lovely pictures against the spring foliage.  there was a small fence, about 12 inches high seperating the grass from the sidewalks, just a demarkation line, not a "do-not-cross" type fence.  the bride lifted her heavy and full skirts and nimbly stepped over the fence in her fancy heels.  the groom tripped.  for some reason this struck us as humorous.
a year and a half later in September I returned to Wells for an alumnae meeting, bringing my fiance.  Him and K got along very well indeed, as she spent the time with him in the library (her campus job) while I was in my meetings.  We went back that spring for the graduation of her class.  W was also graduating, and many many many of my friends.  that was the last time I saw her.  we hugged tightly and she told me to not look back as dh and I went to our car and she walked around the corner of Main.  that was May of 2001.
In September of 2001, our world changed, and my friend K abandoned her graduate studies in DC.  last I heard she was living with her sister in England, and her two email addresses I have are no longer valid.  I gave my older daughter her name as a middle name.  no one of my friends knows K's whereabouts, or her status in the world.  I love my friend, and I hope that she is doing well.  I hope she is not in Pakistan, but I cannot think that England or the states would be that much safer for her either.

So, this is for K, where ever you are, whatever you are doing:  I love you.  be safe. k'hada cHafez!

Nostalgia

I too wish I knew what happened to K. We have a Pakistani restaurant here and occasionally try to pronounce the couple of words that she taught us.

I know I haven't written you back, but I'm following your blog pretty regularly and enjoy hearing about all of life's exciting events.

Thanks for the happy moment down memory lane.
