Belle's Homestead challenge -entry #1: grocery budget cutting

Okay, I admit it, I am a LEECH!!   I have been gleefully reading everyone's  homesteading posts and  taking them for my own, but I have not been very good on the reciprical.  so today I will (hopefully) be posting a few homesteading tips from my household.

tip #1 on grocery savings and weight loss:

PORTION CONTROL

need I say more?  but, alas, I feel I need to in this day of super-sizing and "valuepacks."  When we first got married, dh, his two bachelor bros (who came to dinner once a week), FIL (who lived with us) and I could eat a full 9x13 pan of lasagne, with enough left over for 2 lunches.  I have never had a weight problem (unless you count underweight, which I was until I had children, except for a small stint living with an old Italian woman in Florence), and I was known for being able to eat A LOT.  dh and bros and dad were all overweight.  BIL that decided he weighed too much and dh went on a diet.  what did they do?  cut out all sweets for a year - but that didn't help much.  what did, was PORTION CONTROL.  Suddenly, they would only eat ONE piece of lasagne.  I sent cut fruits and veggies to work for them (BIL works w/ dh) and that it what they would eat when they got hungry.  now, this was in the heyday of Atkins, which echews carrots and fruits... but I sent strawberries and watermelon and carrot sticks and cucumber sticks and cantelope.  suddenly I started to only eat ONE piece of lasagne, and I was full.  now with those same 5 adults and 2 children we only eat a bread pan (9x3) of lasagne at dinner, are satiated, and still have a piece leftover for dh lunch.  BIL lost A LOT of weight (I don't know the exact figure, but he looks GOOD) and dh lost 65 pounds in 9 months.

so, by teaching our bodies to recognise hunger and satiated levels, we cut grocery in thirds.  we remind each other not to overeat, just cuz it tastes good, and I plan meals so we do not have tons of leftovers, which means often cutting recipies in half.

along with that, in casserole, soup, pasta sauces, chili, etc. I cut the meat in 1/2 or 1/3 of what the recipe calls for.  we do not need that much meat.  the meal tastes better, we think, and it is healthier.  and cheaper.

I have been trying that - and need to keep with the program. If I made LESS, would I EAT less???

That's the trick!
