holidays, mice, and homesteading

well, we have been busy here.  we have been here for three weeks, and have made the 1.5 hour trip to SLC 3 times.... a funeral, a church program in our old ward that the kids were a part of, and my in-laws Thanksgiving.  by 4 weeks here, we'll have done anopther trip - my family thanksgiving....  oy vay!  makes me wonder why we moved at all!!!!  except, once the holidays are over, we can stop all that messing around... and my in-law Christmas will be here, so that is one trip we do not have to make.
my in-laws got practical about holidays, since the SIL who does the planning was the only other sibling - of 7 - who was married, she wondered if we could do thanksgiving and christmas the saturday before the actual holiday to prevent in-law scheduling problems.  so, that is what we do, adn I must say, it is so nice to have that so we don't have to fight the family thing.  so now, our only decision is which Saturday we are going to use this year - the 16th or the 23rd, since the 23rd is so close to the actual day, it might be kinda hectic for everyone.  but, no one has issues about coming up here for the christmas brunch - better than dinner for us, since their family ALWAYS had a big breakfast Christmas morning, and this way we could continue that... and still have the evening free for other activities in this crazy month.  I also need to check my email to see the names of those for whom I need to get gifts.... with 7 sibs, 4 spouses, and 2 parents, gift-buying got crazy.... so now one BIL wrote a program that generates two giftees AND 2 gifters per person, neither one to be a spouse, with a limit of $20 (except the emails that say to give to him, say minimum $500.... hmmmmm...) and all kids under 18 get presents.  so, instead of 13 gifts to finangal, we only have to worry about 4, plus kids.  I thought about doing that with my family, but with only 3 sibs, and 2 spouses, we would be getting a present for all but one person.  sounds kinda silly to be excluding someone that way.
anyway, I cooked down a pumpkin friday, bottled it, made rolls and pies and need to freeze annother 2 quarts.  mmmm - we love pumpkin stuff around here, and bonus - it is soooooo good for you!
I am planning my SFG - I think I will get 3 boxes - two 4-ft (one dedicated to strawberries) and one 3-ft.
we have mice.  fun stuff.  we had not been here 4 days when we discovered that fact - one had chewed the scrolley on my mouse - A Mouse Ate My Mouse! lol  we have bought a number of stuff, including glue, and caught one in my pantry!  ugh!  good thing I have tupperware - they cannot chew through that stuff!  but, question for anyone who knows: can they climb straight up walls?  sure seems like it!  is my table - without a table cloth - safe?
we have been doing school every morning.  we start with the Pledge, a scripture and a prayer.  my kids love it!  not a long school day - about 20-30 minutes, but they are only 2 and 5, and we also do piano practice and karate practice every day.
love it!  anyway, I need to go make a midmorning snack!
oh, my SIL loves my homemade soap, and went online (I have no idea where) to find out how to do it herself, and got scared by a story of a guy who let a lye crystal hit his counter, scarring itforever.  Next time I make soap, I will invite her over to help.  I was also scared by the idea of making soap, but thanks to Ashley and my dear friend, I am now excited by the prospect!

have a great day!

Soap

08:38 AM, Monday, November 20, 2006 .. Posted by teapots66
Good morning! A friend & I took a class over the weekend, we made soap! I posted a pic on my blog... it was easy, you just have to use caution with the lye, of course. Don't be afraid, it is very rewarding. Do it when the kids are not in the kitchen... and post a pic when you're done. Best wishes to you this week - Chris

Mice

Mice can get everywhere, it seems. Make sure your table is away from the wall ... I SWEAR they can climb walls. They might not be able to climb the table ... tell you what ... I\'ll write about it more when I get home!
