I remember…. Grandma

Last Friday morning I received a phone call that my grandmother had gone to sleep the night before (in a bed made of nice, clean flannel sheets "ah, this is sooo nice and comfy!" is what she said) and woke up on the Other Side, to be greeted, I am sure, by her daddy and an infant son who had died some 56 years ago.  they - being, my grandparents, my eldest aunt and her husband, and my grandparents best friends - were on their way to Arizona for the winter.  my mom, her youngest sister (there were 5 sisters in the family) and my sister immedietly drove down to St. George to help Aunt #1 with grandpa and other arrangements.
I cannot imagine grandpa without grandma.  she was just always everywhere and happy.  at 4'8" she was a little bundle of joy.  about 8 years or so ago, she fell off a ladder and hit her head, causing a blood clot to grow - unknown - and press against her brain.  this made her memory so bad... and odd, since dementia is NOT something that runs in our family.  they finally figured it out and operated to remove it, but the damage was done, and the neurons had found new paths... and she forgot who she was talking to, and where she was.  she remembered to stay by grandpa, and where she lived, and that she loved her girls and their kids, but not our names.  I guess the point of this is that now she is once again the grandma I knew and loved all my life.  I am not sad she has departed this life; I will miss her terribly, and I worry about grandpa; next month would have been their 60th wedding anniversary.  He wanted to go back to their cabin and spend the winter alone - and drink himself to death, I am sure.  his best friends told him he was going to Arizona still.  Willy-nilly.  thank goodness for good friends!
anyway, my tribute to my grandmother:

I remember….
Grandma, knowing everyone we met
At the store, camping, everywhere
I remember….
Grandma, taking care of her grandchildren
Like they were her own;
I remember….
Grandma, like a second mother to us all
Kind and loving and no nonsense
I remember….
Grandma, laughing and playing
Willing to try me at Trivial Pursuit
I remember….
Grandma, surrounded by her daughters
And their many children
I remember….
Grandma, a matriarch of her family
The nucleus of our holiday parties
I remember….
Grandma, her house the only one at which
A knock was never necessary
I remember….
Grandma, with kittens to play with
And puppies to chase
I remember….
Grandma, her cabin center to a thousand adventures
From deer to rock climbing to ant hills
I remember….
Grandma, with pink hair in the early eighties
And do I remember an incarnation of orange?
I remember….
Grandma, loving grandpa in their funny way
And his tender care of her
I remember….
Grandma, her working hard all her life
To take care of her home and family
I remember….
Grandma, excited to see her grandchildren
And loving their children as much
I remember….
Grandma, introducing my boyfriends
And her amazement that boys could be so tall
I remember….
Grandma, welcoming my dad as a son
And my friends for long visits
I remember….
Grandma, my grandma, my mother’s mom
My grandpa’s wife, our family’s center.

I remember…. Grandma.

Your memories are touching. Thanks for sharing - and here's a prayer for your grandpa as he faces the next few months without his companion. 60 years is a LONG TIME. What a blessing. -Chris

What a blessing to have such memories of your Grandma, a blessing to share with your children,
a blessing to have a good role model of what kind of Grandma you can be to your Grandchildren on day.
God Bless you and yours m.j.
