Luck is what happens when Preparation meets Opportunity

In college we read and dissected some books by Horatio Algiers - great books if  you haven't read them.  (There are new studies now that claim he was a pedophile, but I don't know if that was true or just our warped society trying to justify its own moral depravity by putting a modern slant on a 19th century writer and his works.  Either is possible.)  Anyway we debated at great length about the luckiness of his heroes: they always seemed to get the best breaks in life, although at the bottom to begin with.  His heroes, although poor and living hand to mouth, were always moral and hard-working.  Dick (from Struggling Upward) didn't always want to be somewhere besides the street, but when the opportunity came to improve his situation, he was ready.  Why?  Because he was prepared: he was honest and kind and smart.  Other characters claimed he was lucky.  I think he agreed.  I disagree.  He was prepared when the opportunity came.

So, what has this to do with me and my life?  As you can see, we have a baby due in 3 months.  Our work situation, always wobbly - though well-paying - is getting wobblier by the minute.  We are planning to stick it out until the baby comes for insurance reasons, and we may just stick it out longer if it improves.  But... there are certain opportunities that may be coming our way.
Housing prices are up around here (and expected to continue rising for a bit) and we could sell for a bit more than we paid.  DH has made plans with his family to re-invest time and effort into a family internet business (a home schooling product, so stay tuned for more info on that) that they were doing really well with before we met.  And I am feeling antsy about moving.  I am not saying we are, or where, but....I want to be prepared.
And so, I am looking at my house with fresh eyes: if I were looking to buy this place, what would I notice?  And I am going to work on those.  So that when (not if) the opportunity comes to sell at the Lord's right time and the Lord's right place, I will be prepared and we will reap the maximum benefit out of it.

Some might even say I will be Lucky.

Interesting! I admit, I turned into a basket case when it looked like we might move a few months before Samuel was due. I hope I mature with a few more kids, like you! :)
THANK YOU for putting up the baby-meter! I've been wondering how far along you were. :D
Oh, and your ph strips go in the mail today.

Thanks for stopping by my new blog!

You've got some interesting posts here...thanks for sharing, and for taking the time to comment on my new blog here at HomesteadBlogger.
I do have some tips for going off the grid; at the very least I'll share some good places to find resources and a few ways to conserve that hard-earned energy. I'm in the 'burbs myself and that winter utility bill hits me right where it hurts the most...my checkbook!
Best wishes to your family (or should I say best of "luck"? *grin*). Looking forward to hearing more about this homeschool-related business in the works!
