growing and learning

oh help, I haven't even started, and the soap is a fiasco!

We have plans to make soap on Friday.  Mel and I have set aside the day, been to second-hand stores for spoons, pitchers and pots, raided my mom's kitchen for a scale she doesn't use, bought 2 new thermometers, and have three of the five ingredients necessary for the recipe given to us by Jonash2004
24 oz. olive oil
24 oz. coconut oil
38 oz. vegetable shortening (Crisco)
12 oz. lye
32 oz. distilled water
We cannot find anywhere coconut oil or lye.  On the oil, we have tried 4 different major grocery stores and an asian market.  She is going to check an Indian market near her, and I am going to try Wild Oats, over-priced as they are.  On the lye.... I have tried Wal-mart, Shopko, those same grocery stores.   I have called craft stores and home improvement stores (I  got tired of running all over town to places that can't help me anyway).  Tomorrow I will try a plumbing store or two, and, someone at Home Depot said a janitorial supply store might have some.
I haven't even started and I am discouraged.  Except I really want soap.  If all else fails, I will call the local goat dairy, and ask her if I might buy some lye from her, since she makes yummy soaps to sell.

The lye and oil~

Hi~

You should be able to find the lye at any grocery store. It's in the "Drano aisle" cos it's used as a drain cleaner most of the time. The brand is "Red Devil".

The coconut oil you should be able to find at your local health food store.

But the oils you're using are all pretty expensive things to put in soap. You should look up a recipe for homemade soap that uses beef tallow. It's a lot cheaper. That you would find at your local butcher shop or grocery store meat dept.

I made soap one time, about 10 years ago, and loved it.

Good luck and enjoy. Soap making is one of those real earthy pleasures that I think everybody ought to do at least once.

Peace.

Okay . . . . .

Do you have a Walmart? They should have 32 oz coconut oil for about $2.75. The only place I was able to find lye was Lowe's. We happened to be at Home Depot and checked there over the weekend for a backup place to get it and they didn't even have it! What you are looking for is called Crystal Drain Cleaner, the brand name is Roebic. You won't be able to find Red Devil lye because it isn't carried in the USA anymore. It's used to make, um, a type of drug that starts with the letter "m" so it is hard to find!! The CDC is 100% caustic soda, which is lye.

Finally, if you can't find coconut oil I do have sponification charts and all kinds of that stuff and I can do the #'s (with my dh to double check me) to let you know how much of whatever kind of oil you want to replace it with. For instance, if you want to use corn oil you'll have to use different oz's -you can't just replace the 24 oz of coconut with corn. Follow me? :)

Don't give up yet! :)

lye and coconut oil

You will probably have to order lye online. They dont sell lye in stores anymore. Check the links on my site. Soap Saloon is listed and they sell lye. Walmart has coconut oil. I think the brand is LouAnn's. It is in the baking isle with the other oils. You could also try an all olive oil recipe if you cant find the coconut oil. I have found that coconut oil really dries me out. I have an olive oil soap recipe posted on my blog. Hope all this helps.~Shaundra
