Update on scripture reading

Do you all remember, back in October, I blogged about wanting to read my scriptures daily again?  Well, it has been 3 months, and I am happy to say, I have done so!  Well, mostly.  When we go to my mom's and spend the night, things get hairy, and since my whole family sleeps in the same room, and I am used to a) going to bed AFTER my children and b) reading in bed just before sleeping... well, it just hasn't happened there.  But that has been the exception.  Every night, I pull out my bible study book and my New Testament, and read about the Life of Our Lord.
It is interesting reading the Gospels like this.  Always before, I have just started in Matthew 1 and read through to Revelation.  This study has directed me to read the same event from 3-4 different points of view.  And it is interesting to see what the different Gospel writers thought was important.  SOme skip certain events all together, and sometimes there is a lot of detail given and sometimes almost none.  It is like a puzzle, fitting together.  Like the verse in Matthew 18:16 "that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established."   They each saw the same thing, but it struck them differently, and they recorded it differently.  And together, we have a whole picture!
And the humility of the writers.  For example, when Peter and "the other disciple" ran to see the empty tomb, recorded only in John, you HAVE to wonder if that "other disciple" was John himself, and he didn't want to mention it, but it was such an intimate recording of the situation, it seems that he was the one there.
I am almost done with the Gospels, and I cannot wait to move on to the Epistles.  There is so much to learn, and I am so grateful I have been able to get back into this.

How awesome!!! I am not as good about reading God's word daily and really need to make a point of it. When I was in a bible study I had that accountability, but now that I am not I am definitely slacking. Thank you for reminding me.

I too am a history buff. I am near the end of HBO's "John Adams". It is wonderful if you have the time. It is LONG! Also there is some cursing especially in the beginning.

Have a wonderful day!

Oh, well done for managing to make a habit of daily reading! I remember I used to be terrible at remembering to do it, always saying to myself "I'll do that when I've done...". But for me, the habit came when I got married, and because we can't both wash at the same time in the morning, I read while my husband washes, and he read while I wash. I haven't missed a single day since getting married (and since I missed months on end sometimes before that, this is a major thing for me). How well the routine will work if we are able to have children remains to be seen, but for now it works very well.

I like the idea of reading the Gospels "simulataneously", too - I think that would be very interesting. Maybe one day I'll do something like that, although I like the dated notes I use (can't wait till tomorrow because it's got today's date at the top!).

Best wishes,
Jo

Good for you - I too am trying to stick to a daily devotion. I found it works best for me to read at work before everyone else get there.

Also, thanks for stopping by my blog and for the great idea about the woman's shelter.

Way to go....I think any amount of time we can spend in the scripture is priceless...and so beneficial. Look forward to reading more of your insights.

Thanks for sharing,
Connie
