freecycle and CPSIA

04:24 PM, Tuesday, January 13, 2009 .. 3 comments .. Link
I have been wondering how this silly law will effec tfreecycle - since the CPSIA guidelines say "distribute" in re: to children's items.  I do not know if that has wondered anyone else, but I did see this posted today on two of the boards I frequent (there is my local group, and then one I use in Salt Lake).  Thought I would share, as it contains a letter from the owner of Freecycle.

ADMIN: About new law regarding giving away childrens items

Hello all members,

We've received a lot of emails from concerned members regarding the
new law coming into effect in February 2009. It mentions banning
distribution of children's items. Many members are concerned about
how this new law may affect all of us who use Freecycle to give away
childrens items.

Here is the latest news from Deron, the founder of Freecycle.org,
regarding the issue:

Lot of talk here about the new laws regarding lead in consumer
products. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has been fleshing
out what these new laws will mean in recent days.

The concern: how will this affect us? Do we have to forbid the gifting
of children's products entirely, for example?

What we know: Most recently the US CPSC came out with this statement:

"Sellers of used children's products, such as thrift stores and
consignment stores, are not required to certify that those products
meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards."
(a more lengthy quote below with link to the full quote on their site).

We also know that there is currently no mention of gifting of items. I
have nonetheless taken up the issue with my congressman just to be
particularly clear that this will not have adverse effects on the
ability of our 6.3 million members to be able to gift their used items.

I think this is an example of well-intended legislation that
overreached in its implementation and the US CPSC is now backpedaling
and implementing restrictions on the wording in the actual regulations
of the same.

I am not concerned at this point, but am following up nonetheless to
be safe.

Thanks for being aware of this issue.

Ahhhhh The Warm Water Feels So Good, says the frog in the pot!!!

So the government says: "Smoking is bad for you people" so the government makes a bunch of laws, bans it, taxes the snot out of it........big programs big lawsuits, big publicity.
Gets the message to the little children at school......tell your mommy and daddy to quit, they are hurting YOU. Yes, the government scared the children...........

So the temperature in the pot that the frog is being boiled in, just raised a notch, unnoticed by him.

NOW THE GOVERNMENT is telling us what is good for our kids to wear, and who is 'qualified' to make that decision. Surely not us, the parents, we make poor decisions. We need the government to help us. YES HELP US (all rise in zombie like form and in a monotone voice repeat after the leader).

The heat just went up another notch.

See,no one squawked when the government came down on the smokers............
But it's not about 'the ciggarettes"...........
It's not about the 'second hand smoke"
It's not about "the smell"
It's about control. The government wants to control us.
Just like Stalin. Hitler..........Lenin.
wake up people........

I have not grasped what this law is doing... is it taxing second hand stuff or trying to abolish it? That seems as you say silly... how will that stop us sharing perfectly good ( and ecological) recycling (clothes etc)?

Again.. government confounds me?

thanks for the info. I've not heard about this new law. But then, I've been sick and so busy with trying to just keep up, I've not heard about a lot of things. I DO know we are getting a new President tomorrow, however...LOL
