What a great Christmas day! Yesterday, dh quit work early, and was with us all afternoon and evening. We made gingerbread cookies, and used the cookie cutters my SIL had given me YEARS ago, but I have never used (does that make me a bad mom, that I have never made cut-out cookies with my children?). We had letters, so the kids made lots of letter cookies, and a few Christmas shapes. They liked that a lot. After showers, they each had 2 letters, and then we made a plate with “S-A-N-T-A” spelled on it, and a bell, since “Santa's” favorite song is “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” Our kids know that we are “Santa,” but they like to play along. Then we read a little Christmas story, and then Daddy read THE Christmas Story while we acted out our Little People Nativity to his words. Then everyone went to bed buy 8:30. Dh and I finished wrapping some gifts, stuck the apple, clementine, small bag of candy treats, and a small toy into the stockings, and went to bed. This morning, I started a big breakfast. We love breakfast around here. Love breakfast. So we had decided to do our big special meal in the morning instead of the evening (last night we had orange chicken, and tonight Lemon Bean soup.) I mixed up two varieties of muffins, we had boiled and shredded potatoes last night, I had some bacon out, dh started the smoothie. We opened presents – we don't do a whole lot – lots of puzzles and books and dress ups. Lion got her very own battery-operated train for our wooden train tracks. She is soooo pleased! Now she doesn't have to depend upon her sibs for permission to use theirs. Bug's favorite was a full policeman costume – shirt (with sewn on badge, tie, etc), handcuffs, dart gun, sunglasses, walkie-talkie and hat. I do not expect the plastic stuff to last long, but he is sure loving it! Bear has new coloring books and a princess tiara that she is enjoying. After presents, and breakfast being started, we welcomed our Christmas visitors. They are a childless (by choice) couple that live up the hill from us. They are eccentric, I guess would be the best word for them. We really like them, but know that some on our road find them harsh. He is an artist, does painting, sketches, photography, etc, and must have been extremely successful when they lived in LA. She used to dance ballet, and they kind of remind me of hippies that have never come out of that era. Anyway, we invited them over for Christmas breakfast, and really enjoyed their visit and getting to know them better. After breakfast, he offered to give the kids a little lesson on drawing (Bug had drawn a horse on a birthday card for her). I have never seen Bear sit so long or so attentively when someone was trying to teach her something. She tried everything he told her to do, and smiled big. Bug enjoyed it too, but he was not as enthralled. I like them a lot, and I hope we have more opportunities to interact with them in the future. They live out here for privacy and because they march to their own drum (easier in the country than the city!), and I was afraid (a little, anyway) that they would not deal well with the kids, but they were great with the kids, and the kids were great with them here (a minor temper tantrum over new pencil ownership notwithstanding). After they had left, we played a game of junior monopoly, broke out the numerous new puzzles (a 500 and a 100 piece – daddy's; two 100 piece – Bug's; a 100 and a 63 piece – Bear's; a 48 piece for Lion; I helped everywhere! we have one more to do tomorrow – a 300), and just spent a relaxing day together eating treats, cookies, fruits, and leftovers. It snowed and snowed and snowed all day, until we are snowed into our house. yup, and our road is snowed in. Our neighbor in charge of the HSA just called to tell us that the pick-up trucks the neighbors use are no good tonight – they cannot even get out of their own drives! - so they are calling in the big trucks tomorrow morning. I am not displeased. I do not mind being isolated from the world – we have what we need here, and more. Have a restful evening, and Merry Christmas.
