homesteading is....

I was thinking about this today.  I majored in history in college, and wrote my thesis (about which I can still drone on for hours, if you get me started!) on the women of the frontier.  Our grandmothers who left comfortable homes in a civilized world in order to create a new and better one for their children, women who worked and joyed with their families.
Many times these women went to the "frontier" (which was anywhere from Virginia and Plymouth in the 1600's to Alaska and Wyoming in the 1910's) because it was something their husbands wanted.  But more often, it was a chance for a family to grow their dreams together.  It was a chance to escape from the pressures of "civilized" society and the burden of others' expectations.
And that, to me, is what homesteading is.  It is striking out on my own, to do what I think is right, not what a polluted society thinks (or doesn't think, as the case may be) or what others pressure me to be.
We went to an indoor amusement park for the kids today, me, Bug, Bear, three of my SIL and 3 cousins.  Later, after lunch and naps, me and my kids went back (we live close enough to walk, did I feel like it).  I felt so content to be there with my children I love so much.  They ran around and I kept one eye on each, and they screamed "Mommy, I love you!" every time the ride brought them around to my seat again.  There is nothing to beat that feeling.  We may not have been at home, but I felt like we were homesteading for those few hours alone at the park.  Because we were doing what I felt my family should be doing.  Not what someone else said we should be, or suggested we should be doing.  I don't know if this random rambling makes any sense, but there we have it!
