sewing machine help

11:35 AM, Friday, October 17, 2008 .. 1 comments .. Link
I do not sew.  oh sure, my mom was a great seamstress - could make anything, adapt patterns, and fix clothes.  My method of sewing as a teen:
find likely pattern and fabric.
cut it out.
start sewing.
get stuck fairly early on.
ask for help.
mom take over.
beautiful finished product.
repeat.

but now I am a mom.  and I need to sew patches on little boy pants.  I need to fix dance costumes.  Not a lot of sewing, but enough that I would rather NOT truck my family and all my sewing needs down to Salt Lake every time I have a small need.
so my question: what are your recommendations for a small-ish job sewing machine?  Maybe even - GASP - move into actually sewing new clothing (like modesty shorts for under dresses).  Something that I could easily pack up and put away when not in use, because I do not think I will use it often.  not like my mom's that has a permanent table and corner in her house and was used ALL the time when I was a kid, and even now every November and December.
But something strong enough to punch through a layer or two of denim.

any ideas, helps, suggestions? brands, models, the ones you like, the ones you dislike.  whys.

thank you

The brother sewing machine has always been good to me. I've only owned a viking to compare, but I like the brother a lot. It's old enough that you can get it pretty cheap (usually) and still find replacement parts, manuals, etc. I think Walmart still sells them... I primarily use it for patching boys pants and she does her job! (Actually, 'brother', I guess that would be 'he', whatever. :-)
