Does anyone out there raise rabbits for meat? Any special insights into raising and (uh...) slaughtering the fluffy little cuties, I mean varmints?
I'm considering a sizeable vegetable garden in the Spring and perhaps attempting this endeavor, but I need a little up front advice from someone who has done it...just a little afraid I'll end up with a gazillion critters I won't have the heart to kill!
More on Nebraska...I just finished this cool button:

Don't you want one? You can have it absolutely free, so long as you link to NE : )

Well, it's hard for me to say how to kill rabbits ... I always pointed out the victims and Norm brought them in to me ready to clean. If you want gorey details, I can give them to you. But what you have to do is gear yourself up for the job. Start with one at a time. Once you have the animal (dinner) killed, you need to skin it ... Norm used to cut the head off, cut a slit from the bottom of the stomach to the neck, and the skin will just peel off, if the animal is warm. Cut the feet off and then it's just meat.. they are easier to gut than chickens. Some people say they taste like chicken, but they don't ... they have their own yummy taste.
The best way is to have someone show you - and don't start raising until you learn and find out if you CAN. Surely there is someone near you who raises rabbits (otherwise, where will you get them?) and you can get to know them and learn from them.
They are worth having around ... I have a great rabbit saussage reciepe!!
Good luck!

Howdy! Imagine finding you here. ;~)
If you want 5+ acres of land at an affordable price, you should move to Manitoba or Saskatchewan, at least 45 minutes outside a major centre. We got our 25 acres for $25,000 CAD from an old farmer who just wanted to subdivide off the unwanted house/farmyard and save himself the taxes.
When we were down to Yellowstone, the boys at the wedding we attended were reminiscing about their time in Canada and how much more space (and cheaper) it is up here... Just thought I'd be bad and throw temptation in your way, here. :~D
Blessings!

is what I raise. My sheep and horses are kept for fiber and riding purposes. I've nothing against raising meat and have raised, slaughtered and salted away pork. For this little household of three, it's no longer feasible to raise meat in quantities...now it's vegetable and fruit gardens.
God's blessings on you, yours and the work of your hands,
Sandra

We thought we would do that one day long ago. But we chickened out. I also had heard that there was a disease you could catch from eating too much rabbit. You may want to research that before you go getting too many rabbits!
