The little puff balls have arrived at their new home, all 51 of them, had 52 but it was in trouble when I picked it up, smaller then the rest and had lots of poop stuck to its backside. I couldn't put it down, let it go in peace by itself and here I'm going to use these for meat. Toughin up linda , toughin up. It didn't last to long thank goodness.
Their in the dining room, why not, all the garden plants are in there to, maybe the plants will keep the peepers smell down a bit . I took the picture right when I got them , notice hardly any poop, that didn't last long. I have papered it many times so far. In the morning I'm heading to the store and getting some cedar wood chips for bedding, it will smell much better. I'll keep them in here for a few days then out into their permanent home. All the waste will be composted
The Cornish -Cross is a fast growing meat bird , big breasted meat type of chicken. It can be dressed out in 6 to 8 weeks. They will be feeding many in our family. We know how they will be raised, plenty of clean living space. They will be there until its time for them to give. We are thankful for all the food we rec., plants and animals that give up their living for us. We do not take this for granted.
Grand kiddies will be over this weekend and they will love to see the chicks. It will be a good learning experience for them to hold the baby chicks, gently now , gentle, let go, LET GO!!!!. I know hows its goin be
After getting these chicks I can't wait tell I get the rest of the poultry.
The (Barred Plymouth Rocks) will be for the eggs and the Booted Banties, well there just darn cute, make good mothers and don't do as much damage in the garden as bigger chickens do.
Well I hear them peeping , so this mother hen needs to see whats up.
Have a peaceful evening, Blessings

- Time for New Chicks
-
This is a picture of my Ol'Gals, Barred Plymouth Rocks, my favorite so far. They lay a nice size brown egg. And the girls have a good deposition, gosh they even sing,so very soothing.
When I got them some 10 years ago I ordered 50 pullets, but a couple of roosters came with the bunch. Along with 100 cornish cross for butchering. But the girls were for the eggs and with only 11 left after so many years , they'll still crank out an egg or two.
The roosters started their king of the roost right off the bat when they were getting their feathers. One was a hot shot and the other was ,will a wennie. The girls got their pecking order in to. Now the big roo was a meany, he was a good protector of his clutch, now big girls, but a little to protective. I could not go into the Hen Den to gather eggs without being attacked. I got nailed big time by his spur and that was that. Pass the fried chicken please!!!!
The new guy in town was now the wennie rooster, happy was he until the group was free rangeing while I was out doing chores. I heard a noise, looked up and there in the garden was roo in the mouth of a red fox. I yelled, I ran, around and around in the garden we did. I don't know why the fox didn't head for the woods that was right there. But just kept running in the garden tell he let go of the rooster. There was a new name for winnie from then on , it was ol' Gimp, he suffered a leg injury that just left him a bit off balance. He didn't out live all his girl friends, but he turned out to be a nice rooster.
New chicks will be here this next month and May. I used to have the Booted Bantum, they are so cute and make great mothers. Sulkies came with the bunch along w/ other breeds. Sulks are so docile, not like the cocky little roosters in the bantum breed.
I have my big box ready for the new arrivals. They will be in my shop for a least a week then out into a warm place in the Hen Den. Separated from the Ol'Gals. About this box, it will be perfect for day old chicks. My sister and her hubby bought one of those big flat screen TVS, I got the box they got he TV, as it should be, we are all happy : ). Our DD came for a visit and seen the box and said she needs this. What "My box"!!!! Now I don't mine giving away stuff if the other person needs it more then I do but my chicken box, I put my foot down, said NO to DD and she wonder why I was so up in the air about it. Found out she was talking about the picture of the big screen TV that she wanted , not the box : ). OH, the eyes of the beholder.
Some things you just have to put your foot down and stay with your plans, try not to assume that you and others are on the same page.
But just incase I guard that box, for it will be the home of many little chicks.
The sun is shinning and there's mushrooms to be found, all have a great weekend, come back for a visit. tc linda
